Of watches nlone there are received
here and nt the twutty-two brnt.t'lt '
decs from a thouniml to twelve hun
dred n day, about liSO.OOO In a year, the
average lonn on a watch being U0 or
40 francs. The olllclnl assured me that
In this great number of watches scarce
ly one In a thousand has been stolen,
the fact being that people who have
come dishonestly by watches or other
property light shy of the mont do plete.
Tho reason of this was presently made
plain as wo watched the formalities of
record, nnd I realized how dlillcult It
would bo for any one to do business
here under n concealed Identity. Every
client receiving a loan greater than 15
francs must produce some olllclnl docu
ment nn Insurance policy, a citizen's
voting card, a permit to curry arms or
a rent receipt bearing his signature and
throwing light upon his station In life.
For loans under 15 francs the client Is
simply required to show nn envelope
through the mnlls to his address. All
those facts, with various others, are
duly Inscribed upon huge record sheets,
bo thnt whoever' deals with the mont
de plete exposes himself to the scru
tiny that must be ungrateful to folks
of shady antecedents. Indeed, certain
persons make this a grievance against
the mont de plete nnd declnre the Turls
system nn Impertinent intrusion upon n
client's privacy, which would seem a
point badly taken If the client Is nn
honest man. Cleveland Moffett on
Paris Pawnshops In Century.
Cards Dlacloae the Man.
"I wish I hnd not played bridge with
Mr. X.," said a girl recently. "I thought
him bo nice before, nnd now my liking
for him has quite gone. Ho was so
keen about trifles, insisted upon every
forfeit, questioned tho Bcore and seem
ed so annoyed when ho lost, nnd yet
the stakes were very small, and ho
was only out n few dollars; so, of
course, It was not the money. It must
liavo been the disposition of the man
coming oit under provocation, und the
test did not show him up to advantage.
Now. Mr. .., the other man at tho ta
ble, was so good natured nnd such a
gentleman in his play that I quite like
him, although I never thought him at
tractive before."
All giiines of competition may be said
to assay certain characteristics, but the
most crucial test seems to be card
plnylnc nnd bridge Is responsible for
nian.v .. coolness resulting from self
betrayal at tho green table. New York
Tribune.
