Palestine Is Sacred to Christian, Jew
and Mohammedan.
Wo aro accustomed to consider
Palcstlrio only as tho Promised Land
of tho Jewish race, and tho scene of
tho most sacred oventa In human his
tory tho birth and burial place, the
homo,, tho placo of tho crucifixion and
tho resurrection of the Redeemer.
"Wo forget that It ia also a Holy Land
for-tho adherents of another religion,
who outnumber tho Christians and
tho Jews combined, and arc without
doubt the most numerous, tho most
dovout and tho most fanatical of all
rollgious believers. Tho Mohamme
dans number not less than 400,009,
000 and perhaps 500,000,000. A large
portion of them trace their ancestry
to Esau and Iohmael, as the Jews
trace theirs to Jacob, and aro equally
attached to tho scenes of Old Testa
ment history. Tho tomb of Abraham,
tho well of Jacob, tho River Jordan
and tho Bite of tho temple are aa
precious and sacred to the one as
to tho other. Tho Mohammedan
cares nothing for tho sultan except
as tho successor of Mahomet, the
vislblo head of the churdh, .but hla
religion is a live, tangible and essen
tial thing which influences and often
controls his movements as well as
his emotions. No other faith, no
other race, are so dependent upon
prayer and worship. No other is so
scrupulous in tho observance of tho
teachings of his Bible and his priests,
or In tho observance of his religious
duties and vows.
THOUGHT MULE8 WERE BETTER.
Stockholder Unable to See Advan
tages of Electricity.
Down In Florida a fev years ago
at ono of tho famous summer resorts
was a small street railroad a little
affair that did not amount to much,
but was supposed by Us proprietors
to bo aufllcient for all ordinary pur
poses. One day In the course of a
discussion the owners were accused
of being old fogies and behind the
times. "Why don't you get together
and be up to date?" they wero asked.
"You really ought to have a modern
equipment for a placo of this char
acter. Instead of an old road of
mule-drawn cars that date back to
tho flood."
After considerable deep meditation
and with many misgivings tho road
was ordered changed to an electric
line, and an eighty-horse power equip
ment was ordered. The outfit arrived
and was installed but for some rea
son failed to operate properly. An
outside expert wad then called In to
examine the plant and locate tho
trouble. At a special directors' meet
ing he reported that tho rated efficien
cy 01 tho plant was eighty horse
power, and that eighty horse-power
wero" being used for the actual opera
tion of tho road. At this one of the
directors jumped up and exclaimed
excitedly: "Eighty horse-power for
what we used to do with six mules?
I guess we had better go back to the
mules.".
