LAND IN DEMAND
Why Western Canada Can Take
Her Pick of Settlers.
Opportunities and Conditions Ther
Appeal to the Most Desirable Pos
sibilities of Country Proved.
While Cnnndu wants settlors, and Is
pursuing every legitimate means to
secure them, It Is realized, us pointed
out by Hon. J. A. Calder, minister of
Immigration and colonization, that se
lection Is necessary, and In order to
keep undesirables out of the country
legislation Is passed that will doubt
less have this effect. As pointed out
by the minister, the class of settlers
which Canada stands most ready to
welcome are those who desire:
Opportunity to acquire good farm
land, either free or at a cost within
their menus.
Opportunity to live In n country un
der healthful conditions and liberal
laws and among an Intelligent and
friendly people.
Opportunity to live In a country
where children receive free public edu
cation and where all children are en-
..hlml tn st.irr In tlio l.nttln nf llfn with, t
. ... , ,
as nearly
as possible, equal advan-
tages.
Opportunity to live In a country
where Industry applied to the land
will produce something more thnn the
bare necessities of life, and will afford
within reasonable time comfort nnd
Independence.
Opportunity to live In n country
where ambition Is not handicapped by
uny creed, birth, or class, but where
every citizen has the right to aspire
to the highest position In his or her
chosen walk In llfe. -
Those are the conditions which will
appeal to the most desirable peoplo
for this or any country, conditions
which, to n certnln degree, make an
automatic selection of the fittest.
Canada possesses farm lands In
large areas which may be hnd free or
at u cost within the reach of the set
tier of limited menus. Vast areas are
available for settlement within reason
able distances of railways. Land val
ues have In the last quarter of n cen
tury received a tremendous Impetus,
so thnt any good farm land which can
still bo secured In Its raw state at
reasonable prices Is on attraction.
Such lands today are probably more
attractive to the settler than were the
free homesteads of the pioneer era.
The country has been tried out; Its
possibilities hnve been proved; the
trails hnve been blazed; the founda
tions have been lnid. Railroads, tele
phones and public roads have been
provided; market towns dot the prai
ries and other agricultural districts;
schools, churches, and all the murks
of modern conditions of life abound.
Records which have been taken over
a period of years establish the fact
that Western Canada's grain produc
tion Is greater per acre thnn that ot
probably any other new country. It Is
worthy of note that the production of
grain per acre In many of the older
countries has increased with the In
tensified, farming methods which the
very high cost of land made necessary.
This condition does not yet obtain to
any extent In Canada, and yet the
yield compares favorably with somo
such countries in which the -cost of
land Is very much greater than It Is
In the fanning districts of the Do
minion. In most cases present owners
of Cnnadlan farm land who are not
cultivating it themselves are willing
to sell at moderate prices anu on
terms urrnnged for the convenience of
the purchaser, provided that the pur
chaser Is prepared to go Into actual
operation and bring the land under
cultivation nnd cause It to produce.
That Is the kind of settler which Can
ada wants nnd to whom It extends
open arms. Advertisement.

X THE third year of the war be
tween France nnd England in
North America, news came to
Port Edward, where lay General Webb
with 5,000 men, thnt Montcalm was
advancing on Fort William Henry, held
by the veteran Scotchman, Munro.
Webb, Instead of going to the nsslst
(ince of Munro, sent him n scant hand
ful of men.
Munro's daughters, Corn and Alice,
determined to visit their father de
spite the danger. Capt. Duncan Hey
wnrd, deeply In love with Alice, offered
to serve as their escort. The party
set out by Httle-froqucntert pnths,
guided by nn Indian, I,e Rennrd Sub
til, or Mngun, as he was known to his
tribe. An eccentric singing master,
David Gamut, attached himself to tho
party, despite Heywnrd's protests.
As the unsuspecting travelers passed
through the thick forests a savage
face glared nt them from a thicket.
Magua was lending the party into n
trap.
Two men snt by the banks of n small
stream about an hour's Journey from
Fort Edward. One, a magnificent
specimen of Indian manhood, hnd n
terrifying emblem of death painted
upon his naked breast. Tho other,
tall, with the lithe muscles of the
woodsmnn, was white.
"Listen, Ilnwkeye," sajd the Indlnn.
"We Mohlcnns enme nnd mnde this
land ours. Then came the Dutch, and
gave my people the flre-wnter. Then
they parted with their land. Now I,
a chief nnd n Sagamore, have never
seen the sun shine except through the
trees, and have never visited the
graves of my fathers. And my son,
Uncns, the last of the tribe, Is the last
of the Mohicans."
As his name was mentioned, Uncas
slipped into view, nnd seated himself
gravely by the side of his father,
Chlngnchgnok.
Almost Immediately the little caval
cade from Fort Edwards enme Into
vew. Heywnrd, addressing Ilnwkeye,
Inquired ns to their whereabouts, ex
plaining thnt their Indian guide had
lost his way.
"An Indlnn lost in the woods?" snld
the scout In perplexity. "I should
like a look nt the creature."
He crept stealthily Into tho thicket,
to return after a moment, his suspi
cions fully confirmed. Explnlnlng to
Heywnrd that the Indlnn hnd tried to
trap the party, he outlined n plnn for
the capture of the trnltor. But, ns
they stole upon him, Magun divined
their plnn, nnd vairished In the thick
woods.
Hawkeye realized the serious plight
of the little party, and volunteered to
help them. They set up the river In
a canoe bound for n enve, where none
but the scout nnd his Indian compan
ions had ever set foot. This haven
they renched In safety, although pur
sued by n band of Indlnns us they
crossed the lake.
They had barely renched their Is
land fortress when Mngua's band ap
peared on their trail. The scout and
his companions valiantly defended their
cave against a horde of Indians, in
flicting heavy losses until their am
munition gave out. Then Corn, see
ing that resistance was useless, begged
the scout and the two Indians to slip
down the river, and attempt to secure
re-enforcements nt Fort William
Henry. But a short while after the
scouts set off, Mngua and his war
riors appeared, and made captive the
whites who remained In the enve.
Mngua divided his band, and set off
with his captives, attended by u hand
ful of braves, ne offered to send
Alice to her father, If Corn would go
with him to his wigwam. Alice Indig
nantly refused, nnd Magun, enraged,
prepnred to torture his cnptlves.
Just ns n brave rushed at Alice,
with tomahawk raised, a rifle cracked,
and the Indlnn dropped. Ilnwkeye,
followed by Dncas and Chlngnchgook,
rushed upon the bewildered Indlnn't; i
only Magun escaped the fury of their '
attack. The captives were freed, nnd j
In n short time the party entered Fort
Wlllhun Henry, despite the fact that
Montcalm was attacking It.
Their stay nt tjie fort was brief,
however, for Munro, his forces henv
lly outnumbered by those of Mont
calm, was forced to capitulate. Mont
cnlm promised thnt the defenders of
the fort should be permitted to depnrt
for Fort Edward, and guaranteed that
they should not be molested. Munro
agreed, and the English abandoned the
stronghold.
As the women nnd children were
filing ncross the plain before the fort
nn Indlnn reached out for n trinket
on the breast of n woman who bore
a child In her arms. Affrighted, the
woman drew buck, whereupon the In
dlnn seized the child and dashed It to
the ground, then burled his tomahawk
In the head of the woman. In nn In
stant the Indlnns of Montcalm's army
fell upon the helpless women nnd chil
dren. Death was everywhere, nnd In
horrible forms.
Suddenly Mngun caught sight fof
Corn nnd Alice, who stood helpless by
the pile of slnin. He seized the ter
rified girls, nnd hurried them Into the
woods. Gnmut, whom the Indlnns
venerated as one Insane, was permit
ted to uccompnny them.
A few days later Hawkeye and his
Indian companions, with Heywnrd and
Munro, stood on the bloody plnln.
They hnd searched carefully for the
bodies of the girls, but without suc
cess. Hawkeye, certain thnt Magna
had carried them off, searched dili
gently for the trail. Suddenly they
found It, nnd tl;e little party set off
after tlio wily lingua? yfeu---
.The tjjjll let! to an Indlnn village,
Vhero they came upon Gnmut, ludi
crously attired ns nn Indian warrior.
Heywnrd, disguised as n medicine
man, entered the enmp with Gamut.
He had been In the encampment but
u short while when an old chief re
quested him to drive the evil spirit
from the wife of one of his young men.
As Heywnrd was preparing for the
unwelcome tnsk, an Indlnn wns
brought Into tho camp, and all thought
of tho woman vanished nt the news
thnt the prisoner was Uncas, deadly
foe of the tribe.
Soon, ns the excitement over the enp
tlve subsided, the old chief, remem
bered the sick woman, nnd escorted
Heywnrd to her chamber in a enve ol
tho neighboring' mountain. As Hey
wnrd, alone in the chamber, save for
the dying womnn, looked around hint,
he wns stnrtled by a great -shaggy
bear, which padded noiselessly In.
Suddenly Its head slipped off, and Hey
wnrd, astounded, was gazing nt Hawk
eye, who, thus attired, had made his
way Into the Indlnn vlllnge.
As the scout rearranged his dis
guise Heywnrd, hearing- u slight noise
In another chamber, investigated, nnd
found Alice there. With nawkeyc'i
asslstnnce, he munnged to bring th(
girl from the chamber nnd stnlt
out of the vlllnge. Ilnwkeye, st 11,
in the character of tho henr, fear
lessly entered the cnbin where Uncns
was Imprisoned, nnd succeeded In lib
erating him. Together they made their
way Into the forest.
Mngun, nlthough keeping Alice with
his own tribe, hnd entrusted the care
of Cora to n friendly tribe of Deln
wnres. Immediately nfter tho cscnpe
of Alice, he hurried to tho encamp
ment of the Datawares to clnlm Corn
By Indlnn taw, the girl was his cnit
tlve, and he bore her nwny, despite
the intervention of Uncns, n hereditary
chief of the tribe.
As soon ns ho had vanished In the
forest, the tribe, under the leadership
of Uncns, prepared to follow him nnd
wnr against his people. In their hid
eous wnr panoply they hurried or,
Muguo's trail.
A bloody battle was fought be
tween the two Indlnn tribes and the
forces of I.o Rennrd Subtil crushlngly
defeated. Seeing that the day was
lost, the wily snvage seized Cora In
his urms, nnd hurried townrd the
mountains, Uncus, neyward and
Hawkeye In hot pursuit.
Corn, knowing the fnte thnt lay be
fore her, suddenly refused to move
from the ledge on which she stood.
"Woman !" cried Mngun, raising his
knife, "choose the wigwam or tlio
knife of Le Subtil?"
As he spoke, Uncns thudded down
beside him, hnvlng Jumped from a
fenrful height to the ledge. Mngun, a
ferocious smile on his dusky fuce,
plunged the knife Into the body of
Ills prostrate enemy. While Mngun
gloated over the dying Uncns, one ol
his companions sheathed his knife In
Cora's bosom.
With u wild cry of triumph, Magua,
after leaping; u wide fissure, made foi
the summit of the mountain. A single
bound would carry him to the brink of
the precipice nnd assure his safety.
He shouted defiantly: "The pale
faces are dogs! The Delawares,
women I Magun leaves them on tho
rocks for the crows I"
He turned and leaped for the
height, but fell short, and only saved
himself by grasping n bush that grew
from the side of the mountain. As ho
slowly pulled himself up, Hawkeye's
rlflo cracked from below. Magua,
shaking his hand In defiance of his en
emy, shot downward to destruction.

A good citizen is n man or woman

A good citizen takes tho time nnd

Evil In Scarcity of Homes.
Much of tho uiiTOht of the country
Is due to the scarclly of homes, ac
cording to l Itoger Miller, hocretury
of the chamber of commerce, Macon,
Ga., who addressed the comentlon of
the National Association of Commer

meeting In Chicago. ,
"Marriages have continued at tho
rule of 1,010,00Q yearly in tho United
States," ho said. "Hut In 11)18 only
5J0,(X)O new homes were erected, while
In 1!)1U the number of new homes was
only 70,00.
"This home shortage is not due to
the war, but to a neglect of the prin

Out of every 100 Americans (10 are dis

The Tide Cityward.
The congestion of population in

It seems to bo un Inevitable conse
quence of our Industrial civilization,

disclosure by the census Unit the
cities are growing seven and u half
times faster than the rural districts
Is therefore no surprise. It Is not so
much that the cities have forced ahead
as that the country has fallen behind.
In the years from 1010 to 1020, indeed,
the cities have gained only live new
