GRAY SAMARITANS
RESCUING CHILDREN
Tho Toung Women's Christian Asso
ciations of tho United States are keenly
Interested In the movement for the re
lief of the 3,&00,000 starring children
of Europe because a group of their
members, the Polish Gray .Samaritans,
have been In charge of distributing food,
to children In Poland. They huve been
serving under tht American Relief ad
ministration and huve conducted food,
kitchens' and distributing stations Id
all parts of Poland outside Warsaw.
In all the relief work being done la
Europe, that of the Polish Grays has
been unique because all the elrls.
though sent from America, were either
born tn Poland or are of Polish paren
tage. When the need for social serv-:
IcV In their country became acuta!
many girls of Polish descent answered!
the caH of the Young Women's Chris
tian Association for overseas service
and enlisted in the preliminary train
ing course that was given tn several1
cities of the United States. From this
group thirty girls were chosen and sent,
to Poland where, since 1018, they have
been coring for the children of the.
country. The distribution of clothing
has taken them Into all parts of'
Poland.
They arc now spending their entire'
time In arranging for the feeding of
children this winter. Groups of them,
travel to strategic centers In outlying;
districts where they set up distributing;
stations receive supplies, prepare
meals, arrange for Impartial distribu
tion and train helpers to continue the
work when they are sent on to the next
town.
