DAKOTA COUNTY HERALD, DAKOTA CITY, NEBRASKA. r Why Compare Beef and Coal Profits? Swift & Company has frequently stated that its profit on beef averages only one fourth of a cent a pound, and hence has practically no effect on the price. Comparison has been made by the Federal Trade Commission of this profit with the profit on coal, and it has pointed out that anthracite coal operators are content with a profit of 25 cents a ton, whereas the beef profit of one-fourth of a cent a pound means a profit of $5.00 a ton. The comparison does not point out that anthracite coal at the seaboard is worth at wholesale about $7.00 a ton, whereas a ton of beef of fair quality is worth about $400.00 wholesale. To carry the comparison further, the 25 cent profit on coal is 3! per cent of the $7.00 value. The $5.00 profit on beef is only 1 per cent of the $400.00 value. The profit has little effect on price in either case, but has less effect on the price of beef than on the price of coal. Coal may be stored in the open air indefinitely; beef must be kept in expensive coolers because it is highly perishable and must be refrigerated. Coal is handled by the carload or ton; beef is deliv ered to retailers by the pound or hundred weight. Methods of handling are vastly different. Coal is handled in open cars; beef must be shipped in refrigerator cars at an even temperature. Fairness to the public, fairness to Swift & Company, fairness to the packing industry, demands that these indisputable facts be considered. It is impossible to disprove Swift & Company's state ment, that its profits on beef are so small as to have practically no effect on prices. Swift & Company, U. S. A. The kaiser has abdicated and the crown prince has renounced tils right to the throne of Germany. The grandiose-scheme of world con quest or downfall has ended In tho complete downfall of German military might and of the rulo of the Uohen tollerns. He who had long proclaimed himself tho prince of peace stood re vealed as humanity's scourge, and ugalnst him and nil Unit ho represent ed rose the new world of democracy nnd freedom. Claims Almighty as His Ally. Many doubt whether William was entirely sane. He said repentedly that he possessed a divine mandate to rule, that the Almighty was his "uncondi tional and avowed ally." It Is not en tirely clear whether such outgivings were the product of n disordered brnln or were due to unbounded egotism nnd an effort to Impress his subjects with the Idea of reverent nnd unquestioning submission. His speches to his armies In which he asserted he and they were "instru ments of divine Judgment upon Ger many's enemies" were regarded by many outside of Germany as pieces of rhetoric, intended only to deceive his own people. Few statesmen realized that the em peror In his "shining armor," maneu vering his armies and fleets, building up tho German military system, ce menting the central empires and Tur key, and fostering the preaching of tho supremacy of autocracy, was erecting a mnchlne that one day would make war upon all civilization". Yet the world was warned by some far-sighted men that tho emperor would one day bring catastrophe upon the nations. These men saw In him then and see him now ns a mud Inven tor, given In his youth the most dan gerous of all toys his army and navy. They were his playthings. Ho de veloped them throughout the years to the point where he had to put them to a test. Like a crazed Inventor, ho feared the end of his reign would find his Inventions untried, so grasped the first opportunity to wage a world war.
