Naturally many farmeis, who have nftver kept books, will have to do some pretty close liijurinu; to ex plain just where they stand. Every thing must bo accounted for. Liv ing' expenses and interest received from investments cannot bo deduct ed from the total. Neither can a farmer allow a salary to himself and expect that to be deducted. Taxes, cost of repairs, but not improve ments, and actual expenses connect ed with the farm may be deducted, but that does not include personal expenses. The department of farm manage ment of the University of Nebraska has in press a large number of ac count books which will be dislrjbut to the farmers of the slate free of charge. They will not only give the farmer an insight into his own busi ness, but will also enable him to make his income report without difficulty. For copiss of tho book, address Farm Management Demon strations, University Farm, Lincoln, Neb. POMK KCONOMICS MEETING The meetings of the Nebraska Home Economics Association will Le held on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of Organized Agriculture Week, January 14 to 19. The pro gram for the Women's Meeting has been very carefully prepared and is one that will interest every woman in Nebraska. In keeping with the times there is a patriotic touch to each day's program and many of the speakers will give help ful suggestions for women's service in war time. All of Wednesday has been set aside as "Conservation Day." Lec tures will be given showing various means of conservation and special attention will bo given showing va rious means of conservation and special attention will be given, in demonstrations, to conservation of food. It is lipped that "Conserva tion Day" may be converted into a "Round Table Day," and that those in attendance at the meeting will have many helpful suggestions to offer. HATCHING EGGS EAKL.Y If it has been tho practice to start incubating eggs In April and May, thus getting out the chicks between tho last week in April and the last week in May, one will have trouble in getting the pullets to lay before January or February of the next year, especially in the case of the general-purpose breeds, according to poultry experts of the Agricultu ral Extension Service. Since the greatest profits are made from pul lets that lay during the late fall and winter, it is very important to start incubating the eggs so that the chicks will be hatched between the middle of March and the middle of April. All pullets hatched at that time and properly raised should be laying by the first of November when fresh eggs are high. Following this plan will increase the profits per hen at least $1 per year. Hatching' eggs early each year becomes an easier task espe cially if one lets tho hens hatch the early eggs, since the pullets will be come broody earlier in the spring. FAUM EQUIPMENT ASSOCIATION A new society to meet during Or ganized Agriculture Week is a Farm Equipment Association, which will hold its first annual meeting on Saturday, January 19. The program will be just one day long and with a patriotic dinner in the evening. "Farm Lighting Systems" and "Tractors" will be the subjects of discussion. Short talks will be giv ed by experts and the users of equipment will then have an oppor tunity to tell their experience. BATTLE FIELD DEATH TEST Minimum Quantity of 33 Per Cent So lution of Dlonln Recommended to Academy of Medicine. Uncertainty as to whether a person bo alive or dead Is especially great on the battlefield, and prompt decision In such cases Is far more Important than In civil life, Avrltes a correspondent at the front. Dr. ' A. Terson has just recommended to tho French Academy of Medicine a new test, those already known having proved insufficient. Tho best of these lntter has been tho Injec tion of fluorescein, as devised by Icard. lint even this Is uncertain, for In some eases men who are still nllvo do not show the green coloration of tho whites of their eyes following injec tion, which the test is supposed to produce. Dr. Terson recommends placing In tho eye a minute quantity of a 33 per cent solution of dlonln (cthyl-mor-phlno), glycerine. If death has already taken place, nothing happens, but if tho mnn has the slightest trace of life still In him the white of his eyes will Immediately turn purplish-red nnd swell, but this Inflamruntlon will disap pear rnpldly and leave no 111 effect. .
