"But you will," ho whispered, nnd his hand touched hers for Just a sec ond. Prudence did not answer. Sho lifted her eyes to his face, and cnught In her breath onco more. A little later ho said, "Do you mind If I go upstairs and talk to your father a few minutes? Mnybo I'd better." "But do not stay very long," sho urged, and sho wondered why tho hrlghtuess and sunshine vanished from tho room when ho went out. "First door to tho right," sho called after him. Mr. Stnrr nroso to greet him, nnd welcomed him to his combination study nnd bedroom with great frlendllne". But Jerrold went straight to tho point. "Mr. Starr, it's very kind of you to recclvo a perfect stranger us you have me. But I understand that with u girl like Prudence, you will wnut to bo careful. I only asked that question out of curiosity. Tell me nbout your relations with your mother when she was living." "Sho has been dead four years." Jerrold spoke with some emotion. "We were great chums, though her health was always poor. When I was in school, I spent nil my vacations at home to bo with her. And I never went abroad until after her death be cause sho did not like tho Idea of my going so far from her." "Jerrold. my boy, I do not want to seem too severe, but tell me, has there been nnythlng In your life, nbout women Mint -could come out nnd hurt Prudence later on?" Jerrold hesitated "Mr. Starr, I have been young, and headstrong, nnd Im pulsive. I hnvc done soifio things I wish now I hadn't. But I believe there Is nothing ihat I could not explain to Prudence sp she would understand." "All right. If you arc tho man, God bless you. And, do you mind if I Just suggest that you go a llttlo slow with Prudence? Itcmember that sho has been sound asleep, until this morning. I do not want her nwnkencd too rude ly." "Neither do I," said Jerrold quickly. "Shall I go down now? The girls have invited mo to stay for supper, and Prudonco says I am to conic back to morrow, too. Is that all right? Itc member, I'll ho going homo on Mon day I" "It is all right, certainly. Spend as much tlmo here us you like. You will either get worse, or get cured, and which ever it Is, you've got to havo n chance. I llko you, Jerrold. Pru dence Judges by instinct, but it does not often fail her." Prudence licnrd him running down tho stairs boyishly, and when he came In, before bho could spenk, ho whis pered, "Shut your eyes tight, Prudence. And do not scold me, for I can't help It." Then he put his hnnds over hers, and kissed her on tho lips. They were botli breathless after that. Prudcnco at last was aroused from her slumber. CHAPTER XI. Sho Orders Her Life. Tlint was tho beginning of' Pru dence's golden summer. She was not given to self-analysis. Sho hadn't the time. She took things ns they came. Sho could not bear tho thought of shnr Ing with Uio parsonage family oven tho least ardent nnd most prosulc of Jcr rold's letters. But sho never nsked herself tho reason. The days when Jerry enmo were tremulously happy ones for her she was all aqulver when sho heard him swinging briskly up the ramshackle parsonage walk, nnd her breath was suffocatingly hot. But sho tool: It ns a matter of course. She knew that Jerry's volco was tho sweet est voice In the world. Sho know that his eyes were tho Boftest and brightest nnd tho most tender. Sho knew that his hands had a thrilling touch quite different from tho touch of ordinary, less dear hands. She know that his smllo lifted her Into n delirium of de light. Prudence never thought of that. Sho just lived In tho sweet ecstatic dream of tho summer, nnd was well and richly content. So tho vacation passed and Indian summer came. It was Saturdny evening. Tho early supper at tho parsonage was over, tho twins had washed tho dishes, and still "Do You Drink?" tho daylight llugered. Prudcnco and Jerry sat sldo by Bide, nud closely, on tho front porch, talking In whispers. Fairy had gone for a stroll with tho still faithful Babble. Connie and tho twins had evidently vanished. Ah not quite that I Carol and Lark came swiftly around tho comer of the par sonage. "Good evening," said Lark politely, and Prudence sut up abruptly. The twins nover wasted pollteuessl They wanted something. "Do you mind If wo take Jerry around by the woodshed'for u few min utes, Prue?" Prudenco sniffed suspiciously. "What aro you going to do to him?" she demanded. In w Jj II II IS Ik M jIW fill II UILiniiill i 9a jhBw. R-V jj "We wou't hurt him," grinned Cnrol Impishly. "Mnybo he's nfrnld to come," said Lark, "for there are two of us, and we nre mighty men of valor." "That's all right," Prudence nn swered defensively. "I'd sooner face n trlbo of wild Indians nny dny than you twins when you nro mlschlef-bent" "Oh, we Just wnnt to uso him a few minutes," said Carol Impatiently. "Upon our honor, as Christian gentle men, we-promise not to hurt n hair of Ids head." "Oh, come along, nnd cut out the comedy," Jerry broke in, laughing. Then tho twins led him to tho wood shed. Close beside tho shed grew a tall and luxuriant maple. "Do you seo this board?" began Lark, exhibiting with somo pride n solid board about two feet In length. "Well, wo found this over by the Av ery barn. Wc'vo found "n perfectly gorgeous place up In the old tree where wo can make n seat. Wo thought you could nail this on to the limbs there aro two right near each other, evident ly put there on purpose for us. See what dandy big nails we have I" "From the Avery's woodshed, I sup pose," he suggested," smiling. "Oh, they are quite rusty. We found tlidm in the scrap heap. We're very good friends with the Averys, very good, indeed," she continued hastily. "They allow us to rummage around nt will In tho barn." "And see this rope," cried Carol. "Isn't it n dnndy?" "Ah 1 Tho Avery barn must be Inex haustible In its resources." "Dow suspicious you are, Jerry," mourned Lark. "Wo thought .when you Side by Side Talking in Whispers. had the board nnllcd on, you might rope it to tho limbs nbovo. Do you sup pose you can do that, Jerry?" "Well, let's begin. Now, observe I I loop this end of tho rope lightly about my er middle. The other end will danglo on tho ground to be drawn up at will. I bestow the good but rusty nails In this pocket, nnd tho hummer here. Then with tho ndmlrablo board beneath my arm, I mount " And Jerry smiled ns he heard the faithful twins, with much grunting and an occasional groan, following in his wake. 1 It was n delightful location, ns they hnd said. Tho hoard fitted nice ly on the two limbs, nnd Jerry fastened It with tho rusty nnlls. Tho twins wero Jubllunt nnd loud in their praises of his skill and courage. "Oh, Jerry 1" exclaimed Carol, with deep satisfaction, "It's such a blessing to discover something really nice about you after all these months 1" "Now, we'll just" "Hush I" hissed Lark. "Hero comes Connie. Hold your breath, Jerry, and don't budge." "Isn't she In on this?" ho whispered. Ho could hear Connlo making weird noises as sho came around tho houso from tho front. She was learning to whistle, and tho effect was ghastly in tho extreme. Connie's mouth had not been designed for whistling. "Sh I She's the band of dark-browed gypsies trying to stenl my lovely wife." "I'm tho lovely wife," Interrupted Carol, complnccntly. "But Connlo does not know nbout It. Sho Is so religious she won't bo nny of tho villain parts." Connlo enmo nround tho corner ot tho parsonage, out the back walk be neath tho maple. Then sho gave n gleeful scream. Bight beforo her lay n beautiful heavy rope. Conulo had been yearning for n good ropo to make n swing. Hero It lay, at her very feet, plainly a gift of tho gods. Sho did not wait to seo wfiero tho other end of tho ropo was. Sho Just grabbed what sho saw before her, and stnrted violently back around the houso with It. yelllug: "Prudence 1 Look at my ropo 1" Prudcnco rushed nround tho pnrson nge. Tho twins shrieked wildly, as thero wns n terrific tug nnd hcuvo of tho limb beside them, nnd then n crushing of branches und leaves. Jerry was gone I (TO BE CONTINUED.) Influences the Brain.
