DAKOTA COUNTY HERALD; DAKOTA CITY, NEBRASKA. WDE 55,000 j OUT OF HOGS On His Western Canadian Farm. It Is getting to bo a long drawn out story, the way Hint Western Cnnndlan farmers linve inndo money. Many of them n few years tgo, cunie to tlio country with little moro than their few household effects, probably n t' nin of horses unil n cow or two, nnd Midi clfnt money to do them for n few months, until they got n start. Hun dreds of such can be pointed out, who today have splendid homos, well equipped farms, the latest machinery and an automobile. Here Ih the f.iKo of A. H. Merrlam, formerly of Devil's Lake, N. D. IJo didn't leave there be cause the land was poor, or farming not a success, for all who know that country are awaro that It Is un excel lent country, lie wanted to expand, to tuke advantage, of the cheap land that Western Canada offers. And that Fame story has appealed to hundreds of others who have had llko success with Mr. Merrlam. Hut his story, and he signs It, too, Is: "I camo to Albertn In the Spring of 1009 from Devil's Lake, North Dakota, locntlng on my farm near Dalroy. "I arrived with six head of horses nnd two head of cattle and about $1,000. Since then, I havo Increased my live stock to seven head of horses, four head of cattle, and about one hun dred head of hogs, n four-roomed house, good barn with all modern Im provements, a feed grinder, elevator, chopper, fanning mill, etc. I havo In creased my original capital at least four times more since coming hero. "From tho feeding of hogs during the last year, I had a gross return of $5,000. "I first started grain farming, but during tho past four years I have mado hogs my specialty, and you may seo by tho foregoing statement for 1!)1(J that I havo not done so badly. "Land has Increased at least twenty per cent In value during the past few years, now selling for from $25 to 5115 per acre, with nominal taxes of about $27 a quarter section yearly. "Tho climate here Is better than Da kota In that we do not have so much dry wind; tho winters nro similar to Dakota. "As for farming In general, tho grow ing and feeding of live stock Ib moro sure than the grain farming, if con tinued year after year, and If every farmer follows this he will bo ahead of tho grain growers In tho long run. Taking everything Into consideration, I feel satisfied with lay success In Albertn." (Sgd.) A. H. MKMUAM. Dalroy, Alberta. Mr. Starr, widower Methodist minister, Is assigned to the con gregation at Mount Mark, Ju. lie has five charming daughters. Prudence, tho eldest, keeps houso for him. Fnlry Is a col lege freshman. Carol and Lark, twins, aro In high school. Con stance Is the "baby." Tho ac tivities of tho Starr girls Pru denco's work, Fairy's school af fairs, tho pranks of the young stersand tho family perplexi ties mako tho story; It Is simply n recital of glorllled homely In cidents. This Installment de scribes tho capturo of a burglar In the parsonage. CHAPTER VII Continued. Mr. Starr had, gone to Burlington that morning to attend special revival services for three days, and Prudenco had fifty wholo dollars In the house, an unwonted sum In that parsonngol And the dungeon was not locked. With out u word, she slipped softly out of tho room, ran down tho stairs, making never n sound In her bare feet, and saw, somewhat to her surprise, that tho dungeon door wns open. Quickly she Hung It shut, pushed the tiny key that moved tho "catch," and was rush ing up the stairs again with never a pause for breath. . A strange sight met her eyes In tho twins' room. Tho twins themselves were in each other's arms, sobbing bit terly. Fairy was still looking hurried ly through tho dresser drawers. "They are gone," walled Carol, "our beautiful ruby rings that belonged to grandmother." "Nonsense," cried I'ruo with nervous anger, "you'vo left them In the bath room, or on tho kitchen shelves. You're always leaving them somewhere over the place. Come on, and we'll search tho house Just to convince you." "No, no." shrieked tho twins. "Let's lock tho door and get under tho bed." The rings were really valuable. Their grandmother, their mother's tuother, whom they had never seen, had divided her "real Jewelry" between her two daughters. And the mother of thcr parsonage girls, had further di vided her portion to make It reach through her own family of girls! "Our rings I Our rings I" the twins were walling, and Collide, awakened by the noise, was crying beneath tho covers of her bed. "Maybe we'd better phono for Mr. Allan," suggested Fairy. "The girls aro so nervous they will bo hysterical by tho tlmu wo finish searching the home." "Well, let's do the upstairs then," sntd Prudence. "Get your slippers and kimonos, and we'll go Into daddy's room." Hut Insldo tho door of daddy's room, with the younger girls clinging to her, and Fairy looking odd nnd disturbed, Prudence stopped abruptly and stared about the room curiously. "Fairy, didn't father leave his wntch hanging on that nail by the table? Seems to mo I saw It thero this morn ing. I remember thinking I would tease him for being forgetful." And the watch was not there. "I think It was Sunday he left It," answered Fairy In a low voice. "I re member seeing It on tho nail, and think ing ho would need It but I bellovo It was Sunday." Prudenco looked tinder tho bed, and In the closet, but their father's room was empty. Should they go farther? For a moment, tho girls stood looking at ono nnother qucstlonlngly. Then they heard a loud thud downstairs, as of someone pounding on a door. Thero was no longer any doubt. Someono was In the house 1 Connie and tho twins bcreamcd ngaln and clung to Prudenco frantically. And Fairy said, "I think we'd bettei lock the door and stay right hero until morning, Prue." Hut Prudenco faced thorn stubborn ly. "If you think I'm going to let any ono steal that fifty dollars, you aro mistaken. Fifty dollars does not como often enough for that, 1 can tell you." "It's probably stolen already," oh Jected Fairy. "Well. If It is, we'll llnd out who did H, ami have them arrested. I'm going 'own tu telephone to the police. You fcTJm Ky """ 'V? The llttlo ones screamed ngnln, nnd Fairy sold: "Don't bo silly, Prue, If you go I'm going with you, of course. We'll leavo tho kiddles hero nnd they can lock tho door. They'll be perfectly hnfe In here." But tho children loudly objected to this. If Pruo nnd Fairy went, thnv would go I So down tho stairs they trooped, n timorous trembling crowd. Prudenco went nt onco to tho tele phone, and called up tho residence of tho Allans, their neighbors ncross tho street. After a seemingly never-ending wait, tho klnd-henrted neighbor loft his bed to answer tho Insistent tele phone. Falterlngly Prudenco explnlned their predicament, nnd nsked him to como and search the house. Ho prom ised to bo there In five minutes, with his son to help. "Now," said Prudence moro cheer fully, "we'll Just go out to tho kitchen anil wait. It's quiet there, and nway from the rest of tho house, nnd we'll bo perfectly safe." To tho kitchen, then, they hurried, and found real comfort In Its smallnoss and secure iipss. Prudenco raked up the dying embers of the fire, and Fairy drew tho blinds to their lowest limits. Tho twins nnd Connlo trailed them fear fully nt every stop. Kvery breath of wind oealnst the windows drew slnrllcd cries from tho ' younger girls, nnd both Fairy and Pru dence were white with nnxicty when they hoard the loud voices of tho Al lans outsldo tho kitchen door. Pru denco began crying nervously tho mo ment tho two angels of mercy ap peared before her, and Fairy told their talo of woo. "Well, thero now," Mr. Allan said with rough sympathy, "you just got scared, that's all. Everything's sus picious when folks get scared. I told my wife tho other day I bet you girls would get n good fright sometime, left here nione. Como on, Jim, nnd we'll go over the house In n Jiffy." Ho was standing near tho dlnlno room door. Ho lifted his head sud denly, nnd seemed to sniff n little. Thero was undoubtedly a faint odor of tobacco In tho house. "Been any men In hero tonight?" he asked. "Or this afternoon? Think, now !" "No one," answered Prudence. "I was alono all afternoon, nnd thero has been no ono in this evening." IIo pnsscd slowly through tho din ing room into tho hall, closely followed by his son nnd tho flvo girls, already much renssured. As ho passed tho dungeon door he paused for u moment, listening Intently, his head bent. "Oh, Mr. Allan." cried Prudencp. "let's look in the dungeon first. I want to seo If tho money Is snfe." Her hand was already on tho lock, but ho shoved her nway quickly. "Is thero any way out of thut closet besides this door?" ho asked. "No. We call It the dungeon," laughed Prudence, her self-possession quite recovered. "It Is right under the stairs, and not even u mouso could gnaw Its way out, with this door shut." "Who shut tho door?" ho fnmilrnil still holding Prudence's hand from tho lock. Then, without waiting for an answer, ho went on, "Let's go back in tho other room n minute. Como on, nil of you." In tho living room ho hur ried to tho telephone, and spoke to tho operntor In a low voice. "Call the police- headquarters, and havo them send two or three men to tho Methodist par sonage, right away. We'vo got a bur glar locked In a closet, and they'll havo to ge,t him out. Please hurry." At this, tho girls crowded around him ngaln In renewed four. "Don't be scared," ho snld calmly, "we're all right. He's In there safe enough nnd can't get out for a while. Now, tell me nbout It. How did you Quickly Sho Flung It Shut. get him In tho closet? Begin nt the Ittglnnlug, nnd tell mo all nbout It." Carol began tho story with keen rel ish. "I woke up, and thought 1 heard someone In tho room. I supposed It was Prudence. I said. 'Prudence. nml nobody nnswercd, nnd everything wns quiet, nut I felt thero was someono In there. I nudged Lark, and sho woko up. llo moved then, nnd wo both heard him. llo was fumbling nt tho dresser, and our ruby rings are gone. Wo heard him step across tho room nnd Into n closet. IIo closed tho door after hlui, didn't ho Lark?" "Yes, ho did," agreed Lark. "His hand was ou tho knob." 1D iSntsToom aSwoko went Int her nnd Fairy." Sho looked nt Connie and niusliod. "Connie was asleep, and we didn't wnken her because wo didn't wnnt to frighten her. Wo woke tho girls and you tell tho rest, Prudence." "Wo didn't believe her, of course. Wo wont back Into their room and there wns no ono there. But the rings were gone. Whllo they wcro looking nt tho dresser, I remembered thnt I forgot to lock the dungeon door, where wo keep tho money nnd tho silver-' ware, nnd I ran downstnlrs and slammed the door nnd locked It, nnd went back. up. I didn't heal n sound downstairs." Mr. Allan laughed heartily. "Well, your burglar was In that closet after tho money, no doubt, and he didn't hear you coming, and got locked In." In n few minutes they heard foot steps around tho house nnd knew tho olllcers had arrived. Mr. Allnn let "Aren't You Limber-Limb Grant?" them Into the house, four of them, and led them out to tho hull. There could be no doubt whatever that the burglar was in tho dungeon. He had been busy with his knife, and tho lock was nearly removed. If tho olllcers had been two minutes later, tho dungeon would hnve been empty. The girls wcro sent upstairs at onco, with the Allan boy ns guard as guard, without re gard for tho fact that ho was probably more frightened than any ono of them. Tho chief ofllcer rnpped briskly on tho dungeon door. Then ho clicked his revolver. "There nro enough of us to over power three of you," ho said curtly. "And wo havo men outside tho house, too. If you put your firearms on the lloor, and hold both hands over your bend, you'll be well treated. If vour hands nro not up, wo flro on sight. Get your revolvers rendy, boys." Then tho ofllcer opened the door. Evidently tho burglnr was wise enough to nppreclnto tho futility of lighting ngalnst odds. Ills hands were nbovo his head, nnd In less than n second ho wns securely manacled. Tho chief ofllcer had been eying htm closely. "Say!" ho exclaimed. "Aren't you Limber-Limb Grant?" Tho burglar grinned, but did not nnswer. "By Jove!" shouted tho officer. "It Is! Call tho girls down hero," ho ordered, nnd when they nppeared, gazing nt tho burglnr with mingled admiration, pity nnd fonr, ho congratulated them with considerable excitement. "It's Llmbcr-LImb Grant," ho ex plnlned. "There's a reward of five hundred dollars for him. You'll get tho money, as mire ns you're born." Thou he turned nualn to tho imrL'inr. "Say, Grant, what's a fellow like you doing on such n fifth-rate Job as this? A Methodist parsonago Is not Just in your line, is it?" Limber-Limb laughed sheepishly. "Well," ho explained irood-nntureillv "Chicago got too hot for mo. I had to get out In a hurry, nnd I couldn't get my bunds on any money. I had n lino lot of jewcK hut I mii so pushed I couldn't use them. This afternoon at the station I saw a detective from Chi cago get off the train, nnd I knew what that meant. Hut I needed some cash, and so I wasn't above u llttlo Job of this kind. I never dreamed of getting done up by n bunch of preacher's kids. I went upstairs to get those family Jewels I'vo heard about, and one of the llttlo ones gavo tho alarm.
