The kidneys should receive some as sistance when needed. We take less ex ercise, drink less water and often eat more rich, heavy , food, thereby forcing the kidneys to do more work than natuic intended. Evidence of kidney trouble, such as lame back, annoying bladder troubles, smarting or burning, brick dust or sediment, sallow complexion, rheumatism, maybe weak or irregular heart action, warns you that your kid neys require help immediately to avoid more serious trouble. An ideal herbal compound that has had most remarkable success as a kidney and bladder remedy is Dr. Kilmer's Swamp Root. There is nothing else like it. It is Dr. Kilmer's prescription used in pri vate practice and it is sure to benefit you. Get a bottle from your druggist. JUST MATTER OF PERCENTAGE Legislator Had Figured Out Method by Which He Voted Right in Ma- Jorlty of Cases. During tho last session of a western legislature one member, a tall, nngu lar tnnn with a white mustache of the walrus pattern nnd the faculty of be ing able to throw both his thumbs nut of joint at will, made himself conspic uous by voting "No" on every bill, res olution, or other form of business that came up. However Innocent a meas ure might he, this man voted against It stentorlously. Finally a legislator weakened under the strain nnd approached the gentle man with the walrus whiskers. "Why is It?" asked tho man, "that you vote 'No' on everything?" "I'll tell you," saitl he of the walrus mustache, with a confidential air. "Seventy-five of those bills and resolutions are bad antl ought never to bo passed. And I flgger that any man who votes right 75 per cent of the time Is a pretty durnod good legislator." A Difference. "I hear you have been" 'visiting friends?" "No. Relatives." Quite Natural Proceeding. "How that orator did croak!" "No wonder; lie had a frog In Ids thront." ON THE morning of August 18, 1817, there wits committed In l'nrls n crime which shocked the world, ttnd contributed lnrgely to the revolution of 1813 and the downfall of Louis Phi lippe. On the previous evening the Dul:o mid Duchess do Cholscul-Pruslln re turned to their Paris home, the Hotel Sebastlanl, from their country resi dence, tho chateau of Vitus, near Moltin. Thla historic chateau was built by Fouquet, Louis XIV's famous minister of finance, whoso complete ruin and death in prison followed n spectacular career. Tho duke was the representative of an ancient and hon orable family, and held his head high. Although powerful und Influential be cause of his station and wealth, he was not popular, for he was Insolent antl overbearing, aud had the Idea that this planet was created for his par ticular use, and that its inhabitants were designed to be his servants. Tho duchess also was of a proud and fa mous family, her father being Count Sebastian!, one of tho great Nnpolcon'Q famous generals. Although proud enough, tho duchess wns amiable and agreeable, and was much beloved. For years she had been a martyr. Tho noble duke seemed to make It his His Explanation of His So;u.ch2d Bloody Hands Was Unsatisfactory. life work to annoy and humiliate her. She loved him with an unfaltering de votion, an was shown by her letters to him, mado public after tho catas trophe. In those letters, which were numerous, she pleaded for his affection and confidence in a manner that should huvo melted tho hardest heart. Hut tho duke's heart, If he had such an organ, was composed of concrete. No more pathetic documents than tho let ters bf 'the duchess ever were read by human eyes. She was the mother of ten children, and was not permitted to have any voice in their educntlon or upbringing. The duko regulated that, ns ho regu lated every detail of household man agement. Ho engaged governess after governess, and finally found one who suited him exactly. She was n Madamo Deluzy, of whom tho Uuko becamo enamored. This Deluzy wus in com plete authority, next lo the duke, and even the duchess was expected to take orders from her. At last this condi tion becamo Intolerable, even to tho long-suffering duchess, and she, backed by her father, insisted upon the, dis missal of tho governess. Tho king and queen usqd their influence In tho mnt ter, and Deluzy had to go. And this defeat stirred up all tho bile in tho duke's bilious system. Sueh was tho state of, affnirs when the family returned to Paris from Vnux. Tho duchess and tho children retired to their various chambers. Tho duko went forth to make some visits, and returned homo about midnight. Ho went to his apartment, which wns separated from that of his wife by it vestibule, dismissed his valet, nnd tho mnnslon was sunk In sllenco nnd re pose. About four o'clock in tho morn ing fearful outcries were hoard from tno room of tho duchess. They were followed by violent ringing of the hell. Vttrlous servants ran to tho room, hut tho doors were locked on the Inside. They heard groans and subdued screnms, and tho trampling of feet, us though somebody was being pur IIIIPlI NiM Irlll' m w I " .1 tZ ' iii " ' sued. Then the servants remembered u small side door, nnd they rushed to it, and so .made entrance to the room. There lay the body of the unfortunate- duchess, bathed In blood. She was) clad in her night dress only. On her head there were thirteen wounds, and a dozen more on the neck nud breast. Tho room looked us though n tornado had passed through It, antl there wero blood marks everywhere. The serv nnts, scocked and sickened, ran to tho gnrden, and, looking up, they saw dense smoke coming from tho chim ney of the duke's room, All this tlmo nothing hnd been seen of tho duke, hut, when thu servants, regaining their courage, returned to tho chamber of death, the duke appeared from his own room. When he looked upon his slain wlfo ho seemed greatly affected. "My Godl" ho cried, "who can have done this?" He wrung his hands in his distress, nnd one of tho servnnts noticed that those hands were bloodstained. Quo hand was lacerated, aud thu thumb of tho other hnd been bitten, and both wcro scratched, as though by finger nails. The doctors antl tho police ur rived, nnd the- latter, after examining tho shambles for n little while, wcro forced to the belief that tho duko must have n guilty knowledge. His explana tion of his scratched and bloody hands was unsatisfactory. lie said ho got them stained lifting the body of his wife, but that didn't account for tho scratches ami tho bitten thumb. In his own room there was fatal testimony. His dressing gown was stained, with blood. He hnd made an effort to1 wash It, and there wns n tub of reddened water on tho iloor. In the grnte wero the ashes, of various papers and garments, and part of u blood-soaked handkerchief. The duke was placed under arrest, after a prolonged examination by a police official, but, owing to his exalted station, he was not required to go to jail. lie remained at his own palace, under tho surveillance of police offi cers. A day or two later he fell sick antl a doctor who wns called in said ho had cholera. Other physicians being summoned, they declared that ho had taken poison. It being evident that he was determined to destroy himself, It was decided by the authorities to take hint to tho Luxembourg, nnd he wns hauled there in a sumptuous car riage, escorted by armed guards, for tho people were frantic, and were clamoring for his blood. It wns tho unusual deference shown this red slay er, because of his pedigree, that mad dened the populace, and contributed, in no small measure, to the revolu tion. After the French fashion, the duko wns examined again and again, and the magistrate, at least, was no syco phant. Ho was merciless In ids ques tions antl comments, nnd the nobleman found It a torture. He persisted in de nying tho crime, and told He after lie, only to have his falsehoods made ridic ulous by the keen-witted magistrate. And all the U. ho was growing weak er, and on'Autsust 24 lie wns so low that priests were summoned to give him tho benefit of religion. Ills suf ferings we-o terrible, and tit tho last he made a full confession of his crime and then went to the reward ordained for such n j he. This account may well close with tho remarks of the magistrate, when ho had read the letters of the unfor tunate duchess: "They are precious relics of one of the most beautiful spirits ever created by tho Almighty for tho honor of our age an eternal memorial of tho perversity of one of tho guiltiest of meu. At the same tlmo they suggest the consoling reflection that Providence has sometimes seen fit lo place beside tho vilest natures their most angelic opposltes, so that eyes, weary and offended with gazing on such guilt, may find thus close at hand a reassuring solace." The Useful Quail. . In a plea for the bobwhlte, W. L. Nelson, usslstant secretary of tho board of agriculture, states that a count of the seed in ouo bird's crop revealed that bobwhltes nre known to ent at leasjt 85 kinds of weed seed. For ment he chooses among 07 kinds of beetles, 27 kinds of bugs, 9 kinds of grasshoppers, 13 kinds of caterpil lars and a variety, of nnts, flies and wasps. One bobwhlte has been known to eat as many ns five thousand plant lice in two hours, and he is fond of boll weevils, chinchbugs, cabbngo worms, cucumber beetles, squash bugs, nrmy worms and Hessian files. And yet there nro farmers who aro willing to hnvo all tho bobwhltes on their farms killed. Shooting the hired man would bo more logical. The hired man demands wages, while the bob white works for nothing. St. Louis Benuhllc Bandarjc& Slipped.
