GARDENS IN LARGE CITIES
No Reason Why Certain Difficulties
Shrould Not Easily Be Overcome,
With Proper Thouoht.
There aro a low things that must
bo provided II Omaha Is to becomo
famous for its gardens, and it is to bo
hoped that tho agricultural expert
who is coming hero will attend to
them, says tho Omaha World-Herald.
There would bo many moro gardens
If there wore somo central agency
established where mtn too bney t at
tend to all tho work could call by
telophono and get o reliable man when
one is needed. Tho charity organiza
tions have been relied upon, but tho
men who seek work through thorn
aro often Inefficient nnd unreliable.
Oao business man said: "I havo qulto
a large bit of ground in my back yard
that I would Hko to put In a garden,
but I cannot tako a day off to spado
It up and prepare tho ground for tho
seed. I would bo glad to plant tho
seed and caro for the ground after
ward. Last year I tried getting a man
and after much worry got ono. Ho
was unreliable and tho work that ho
did was hardly worth tho time look
ing after him, so this year I havo con
cluded to seed It down and avoid that
sort of worry."
Tho plan for children Is good and
should bo boostod by every ono, but
a largo number of gardens would bo
planted whero there aro no children
if there wero a place whero tho right
kind of help could bo secured. Lawns
would bo kept in bettor condition It a
man could bo called by telophono
yhen a mower was out of order or
needed sharpening and when bulbs and
shrubbery wero to bo planted.
Omaha gardens and boautlful lawns
would add very much to tho city in
the satisfaction of citizens and visitors
and to tho valuo of property. It might
be a good policy for somo of tho clvlo
Organizations to undertake to supply
this want by establishing such a con
tra! agency. Thero is no doubt that
it would bo a paying enterprise.
