Law Notes says that tho caso of Huvloy vs. Golnlck, 123 Minn. 49E, may woll sorvo as a warning to per sons who profess to be called of God on particular occasions, generally when thoy want to do something wrong. Whatever may bo tho law In tho heavenly courts, advico from above Is no dofonso in an earthly tribunal. In tho caso cited tho dofendant was sued for breach of promise of mar ilago. Reform. Tho chief concern ct every Ameri can Is tho reformation of somebody else. Romlnlscenco and a mcasuro of hope aro combined in tho suggestion of ono of tho women entered in tho Plain Dealer vacant lot and homo gar dening movement. "It is a grand Idea," she writes, "to got Cleveland back to what It was when I remember it first tho forest and garden city of tho state." Many memories span the same stretch ot Cleveland history, and many residents aro welcoming tho opportu nity to do their Bharo in restoring, aB far as practicable, tho conditions that existed half a century ago. Much of the change wrought in this period cannot now bo remedied ; yot a good deal can bo done In tho direction in dicated. An Industrial city, growing by leaps and bounds, cannot expect to retain all tho sylvan beauty of Its younger days. Shado trees are poisoned by elements In tho atmosphere that should not I havo escaped tho chimneys, and by 1 poisons In the soil that should have been confined lo pipes. Tillable va cant lots becomo fewer in number and tho old-fashioned garden of roses is likely to glvo way to other, less pic turesque devices. Yet tho city really needs this comA panlonshlp of cultivated trees and gar dens moro than tho village did) for tho country moves farther afield and the moro highly organized urban life bo comes tho greater Is tho need of such relaxation as homo gardens afford. Tho Cleveland of earlier days was a town of trees and flowers, of homo plots blossoming in copious measure to match tho earnestness of their own ers. "To get Cleveland back to what It was the forest and garden city of the state." Plenty of loyal residents, young and old, will second the sugges tion. Cleveland Plain Dealer. USE OF MANURE IN GARDEN Matter of Much Moment to Those Who Desire a Luxuriant Growth of Flowers. Nearly every owner of a garden knows that he must annually Bupply the garden with stable manure to keep up the physical texture and gen eral plant food In the soil. For this nothing la better than well-rotted horse manure. But thero are special crops of flowers that need special feeding to get high-class flowers. An Inquiry Is Just at hand asking for "rush food" for carnations. The grower wishes to feed heavily at proper tlmerln or der to produce showy blossoms f early winter. Carnations havo very fine halr-llko roots that need equable conditions of soil, moisture, tempera ture, food, etc. Aside from a rich, frl ablo soil, potash and lime are needed to keep plants in good general health, both of these aro supplied in wood ashes, or one may uso air-slaked lime and either sulphate or nltrato of pot ash. The latter also contains nitro gen. "Well-rotted animal manures, es pecially pulverized sheep manure, mako fine stems, leaves and general plant growth. If stems aro weak, bone meal and lime will stiffen thQm and also Induce tho formation of flowers. Feed frequently, but in email or light doses. , 41 Desirable Magnolias. Chinese and Japanese magnolias are especially desirable for lawn planting. Thoy prefer a warm, rich, dry bo!L and should bo planted carefully In the spring. The Yulan magnolia, M. con Bplcua, Is known for Its largo white flowers, produced beforo the-leaves. It Is shrubllko while young, but becomes a symmetrical tree as It attains ago. Similar in habit, but blooming n Httlo later, is Soulango's magnolia, flowers white and purple, cup shaped, three to five inches In diameter. Tho foliage is largo and massive, and this mag nolia is bo hardy, vigorous and hand some that It Is extremely satisfactory to plant Earlier In bloom than either of the preceding is Hall'B Japan mag nolia, which Is dwarf in habit, forming a bushy shrub. The flowers are pure white, semi-double and fragrant. It is not uncommon for it to open so early in April that there may be a light snowfall while it Is In bloom. These magnolias vary in price from $1 to $2, as a rule. A Clean Town. As tho citizens so tho town. If this holds true, a city is only the reflection of the people who reside therein. A clean town, then, meanB citizens who tako pride in their own personal ap pearance, In the cleanliness of their homes, In the condition of their houses, in the appearance of their yards, streets, alleys, parking Btrips and pub Ho parks. If the external appearance of a city Is neat nnd clean, visitors aro sure to concludo that Its .residents ore a progressive, clean-cut, active unit. Richmond Palladium, New Advertising Device.
