European war. Today tho keys of
this, tho most venerated sanctuary in
Christendom, aro held by tho Turks,
and Moslem scntinols stand outside of
Its doors, whllo tho pavement in front
of its main entrance is occupied at all
hours by beggars and street peddlers,
who assail visitors and passers-by.
Tho sepulcher is containod within
the walls of a church, in which not
only tho Catholics, but nlso the Greeks,
tho Armenians and the Copts have
altars of worship, it is a grotto, or
cavern, consisting of two rooms hewn

It was in tho outer chamber, the vis

tho resurrection to tho holy women,
in the middle of tho floor, covered with
white marble, richly carved, is a por

sat on Easter morning. Suspended
from the roof are llftecn lamps,, repre

BUY 75,000 HORSES FOR WAR
No Danger of Shortage In This Coun
try, Says Cxpert Big Demand
Later, However.
Warring Huropean nations have
bought and exported more than 76,000
horses from tho United States, but
thero is no immediate danger that
continued exports will cnuso an acute
shortage of horses In this country,
says G. A. Doll of tho bureau of ani
mal husbandry In the Agricultural
Outlook.
"Wo could soil two or three times
the numbor already exported without
thero being any appreciable shortage
of work horses," tho statement adds.
"Tho kind purchased aro for tho most
part very modlocro animals, which
would ordinarily sell for less than
$100 per head, and aro a class of
which wo can well afford to bo rid.
"Tho big domand for horses will
probably occur after poaco has boon
declared. At that time tho countries
now at war, with tho oxceptlon of
HusHla, will no doubt be ver short of
tho Rock of Calvary, and a long strip
of mosaic in tho floor marks tho spot
whoro Jesus was nailed to tho cross.
Beneath a nearby altar is tho hole, or
socket, In which tho cross was planted.
It Is lined with silver. Tho holes for

"Grotto of Adam."
On one side of this altar, enclosed
by a silver railing, Is tho rift mado In

tho "grotto of Adam," becauso tho
skull of tho first man is said to bo

Students of history recall tho lact
that tho Crusaders undor Godfrey of
Bouillon captured tho city of Jeru
salem in tho year 1099, and that it re
mained In Christian possession until
1178, when tho Saracens drove out tho
Invaders. It was during this period
that tho famous Mosque of Omar was
converted Into a Christian church.
When tho Moslems regained control
It again became a mosrpjo, but today
it is regarded as a Btructuro of sacred
interest from the viewpoint of both re
ligions, occupying, as It undoubtedly
does, tho site of the great templo
wherein Christ denounced tho Scribes
and Pharisees, and whoro ho over
turned tho tables of tho money-changers.
According to tradition, it was
hero also that Abraham undertook to
sacrlfico Isaac.

Not only is pencil biting nn ugly
