It then followed tho lino of tho Northwestern tracks through tho north edgo of tho city, finally veering oft toward tho northeast as It trailed out of tho city limits. Approximately one-fifth of tho town was In tho path of tho storm. Twenty- two houses -wero totally wrecked and a huge list of bnrns and other out buildings was added to tho toll of property ruined by tho wind's fury. It was shortly after C o'clock that tho big storm clouds formed In tho west. Many pooplo hurried homo, but others pronounced tho clouds harm less and did not mako any prepara tions for a storm. At G:30, however, the clouds appeared more ominous, and twenty minutes later tho Btorm was sweeping on its course through the town. Had It como halt an hour or an Hour later It would have claimed a greater toll than It did Seward, Neb. Awakening to a reali zation ut' the eiitiisliophe which pounced upon tholr city Wednesday evening, Sewnnl people began Immedi ate plana for cleaning up tho wind swept district and for providing shelter for those whoso homes wero wrecked by tho tornado.. Mayor Caldor, seconded by President Glllan, W. H. Smith and a number of other business men, took a hurried survey of the damage wrought by the storm and then announced that they would endeavor to bear tholr burden ilone. Cleaning-up squads -were planned and activities were under way all day In connection with the housing of the homeless. The day's reports of the patrols, who have been tn the district contlnu clly since an hour after tho storm, showed that no more injured peisoufe had been reported, no pilfering had been Indulged In and that all suffer ers were bearing their losses as optim istically as could ho expected under such trving circumstances. Others thought nothing of tho dark cloudJ which camo rolling up and were at supper when tho twister hit. Only ono flro started In tho pain or tho storm, tnnt being at tho residonco of K. C. Kramp ton. It wns quickly extinguished by neighbors, however, without tho aid of tho tiro department. A flro In tho kitchen stove where supper wan cook ing Ignited a bundle of papors In tho kitchen. Tho flro spread rapidly to tho wreckage roundabout but was dis covered by peoplo who wero Btartlng out to aid in relief work. Tho storm wns hoard approaching for a considerable time. Darkness fell and tho usual ro.irlng accompany ing a tornado gave many peoplo warn ing to go to their collars or tornado enves. Many lives were saved In this way. Tho storm was of short duration. Then followed a sceno of great ex citement. Tho people rushed from tho main pnrt of tho town to glvo nsslst- nnco to thoso who had been moro un fortunate. Tho sight that met their eyes in tho northern part of town was terrible Houses wero wrecked, trees wero uprooted or denuded of leaves. Many houses not In tho direct path of tho storm wore Injured. Somo of them lost roofB nnil projections. Formed West of Sutton. Sutton, Nob. The tornado which Is reported to havo dono considerable dnmago farther east and north of hero, seems to havo formed almost directly west of Sutton. The clouds accom panying the storm were a very unusual sight nnd wero watched by hundreds of people. When It was west of Sut ton, masses of clouds wero flying In all directions, sometimes sinking and sometimes rising Only once, how over, was theio anything in tho form of a funnel obsened from town and that was when a great mnBS of clouds seemed to suddenly sink to the ground. For a time the main part of tho storm seemed to bo coming directly toward town, but later changed Its course, go ing north nnd seemingly following tho Bluo river.
