French Architect Sued the Imitators
and the Case Was Decided
Against the Helrt.
Tho strangest copyright
over dohatod came beforo
cenrt, when tt waa nuked to doclde the
controverted copyright of a house. An
architect at lioulognesur-Selno had
built several apartment houses on a
piece ot ground belonging to him and
hnd dovlscd nn original fnendo of col
ored bricks. Ho, at least, considered
it original, ns whon tho houses worn
finished ho had a plate, with an in
scription placer1, on tho walls, to tha
effect that tho facado of the Iioubo
was his copyright and imitations wero
prohibited. Seeing a building in Paris
somo time afterwards which had Just
been completed, tho architect thought
that tho fncade, which was also of
colored bricks, was nothing but nn
Imitation of bis own. Ho began a
lawsuit ngalnst tho owner and tho
architect for Infringement of tho copy
right laws, but soon nfterward he
died. His hoirs, however, continued
tho lawsuit, which has now been de
cided by tho court. Throo experts
woro called. They ngrm'd that tho
facado of tho houso at Doulogne-sur-Sclno
was peculiar, and might even ba
allowed tho protection of tho copy
right laws; but, on tho other hand,
tho house built in Paris was equally
original and thero was no proof that
It had been copied from the others.
The architect, or rather his heirs,
llieruforo, lost their car.c.

A Silly Season Gift.
"Take your wlfo a silly season gift
of a halt dozen assorted sealing wax
candles," tho BaloHtuuii said.
"Hut I don't know what sealing wax
candles aro," the patron objected.
"This is what they aro." Tho sales
man produced a neat box. "They are
sticks of scaling wax, each contain
a wick. You light tho wick when you
want to senl a letter; tho wax melta
and drops off, und whon you have got
enough for your seal you blow out
tho llamc. A sealing wax candlo
salcvs the expenso and bother of a
second candle. Won't you take your
wlfo a silly season gift of a box?"
"Hut," obpneted the patron, "I don't
think that it is cither customary or
desirable to gives wives presents in
the silly season,"
Mexico's Rubber Industry.
Mexico is uniong the pioneers In
rubber culture, as thero exist today
plantations more than n quarter of a
century old, For many years Mexi
co has been one ot tho largest pro
ducers ot rubber, and its exports have
reached enormous figures, and while
a small amount of this was guayulo or
bastard rubber, tho largest proportion
was of tho cultivated product.

do nil tho thinking, supply all tho
brains, take a crude plan, and turn
out a satisfactory Job. Dut It wouldn't
happen that way more than ono time In
a million. Contractors aro In business
to mnko money. That la all right
enough; nobody objects to a con
tractor making a fair profit, but what
you want to guard r.galnat is an unfair
profit. Tho only way of lotting a con
tractor know exactly what you want

may study a plan a long tlmo nnd

tho houso is going up be can always
And room for improvement. This
loads to alterations, which are gener
ally expensive
Tho specifications should stato that
no alterations will bo paid for unless
tho cousont of tho owner is given in
writing. I know of an old-fashtonod
contractor, familiarly known as "Hen
ry," ,hc did a great deal ot building;
and ho had a motto which read, "Al
ways charge for extras, and never de-
helped by the rooms upstairs coming
directly over the rooms below, thus
giving an opportunity to carry tho
stovepipes through to the rooms abovo
and to warm them, with drums. Houses
may be mado very comfortable In this,
way. Stoves burn less coal than a
furnace and a great many prefer,
them, -t fs easy U warm 'any-part c$
the house, and It la not nocefenry to
koop flro in tho rooms that are not
used.
Tho house is modern and sensible lftl

all right as shown on tho plans and'
perspective; but It will never be com-i
plete as an artistic homo until theT
grounds are laid out and planted with)
suitable shrubs and flowers. No plain,
bare houso lookB right; it shows at
onco tlctt thoro Is something lacking.!
Tho only real comfortable homes are
surrounded with something more
pleasing than brick, mortar and paint
A houBo like this may do num.,
whero conditions aro favorable, for
about $2,000, completo with rbb flr
turca and plumbing, It may bo that
tho gas fixture' are hot wanted at
first; but It is better to put in tho
pipes. Recent improvement In small'
gas plants makes it possiblo and often
dostrnblo to install a little machine
Just for homo use. If tho pipes are In,
tho llxturos and burners can be put
on at any tlmo. Another thing that
should be remembered in building 1
tho hot-air pipes In tbo walls in cas
you ever want a furnace. They mayj
bo easily put In whllo the building is)
going up, but It Is an, awful Job tal
tear out and put thorn in afterward.
