Mert Davis, who was arrested last Thursday on a charge of highway rob bery, the complainant being Amelia O'Neill, of South Sioux City, waived examination 8aturday and was bound over to the district court under 2,000 bonds, which he was unable to furnish. Our ball team was defeated Sunday at the Crystal lake ba'l park by Bobby Black's Knights of Sioux City in a hot ly contested game, by a score of 5 to 3. Paul McAllister came down from Elk Point to pitch the game for our boys, und with the proper support would have won the game. He struck out sixteen of the Knights. At the close of the installation ceremony, which was conducted by Past Grand Master It E Evans, he, on behalf of the lodge members, presented the retiring master, John II Beam, with a handsome past master's jewel Lutheran Conference The forty-first semi annnal conven tion of the North Platte conference rf the Lutheran Synod of Nebr, was held at Dakota City last Tuesday and Wed nesday. The opening session was held on Tuesday evening. Rev Vv' C Eckhart offered the invocation, the choir ren dered an anthem and Rev W S Ober holtzer spoke words of greeting. Rev Lewis of South Omaha being absent on account of sickness, Rev L J Pow ell, of West Toint, responded to the welcome. Miss Perle E Stinson then rendered a beautiful solo after which Rev A E Deitz, of Tones, made a vory interesting and instructive address con cerning the work of the Lutheran church on the Pacific coast. Wednesday morning at 8:30 confer ence was opened with devotional serv ices led by Rev J L Hammond, of Homer. The conference being without a president, ltev uoernoiizer was ap pointed pro-tern and Rev L J Powell, secretary and treasurer. Conference was then addressed in a very instructive way by L Groh, D D, of Omaha, who spoke of his experience in visiting the various charges of the Nebraska Synod of which he is president. Rev Ringer, of Wayne, then spoke in a comprsnensive manner as to tne pur pose of our conference. Following this a well prepared paper was read by Rev L J Powell, of West Point, ou liowio foster the youug people's socie ties. Rev Hummen, of Omaha, was not present to speak on his subject of "Practical results to be derived from a series of sermons.'' ' A number of the ministers present made remarks on this topic A short business session was then held after which conference adjourned to the parsonage for dinner. By the kindness of the ladies of the church all guests were served with refreshments at noon and evening in the parsonage dining room. This arrangement gave opportunity for a very pleasant time in a social way. At the opening of the session in the afternoon Rev Eckhart read an excel lent paper on "The Sabbath, Why keep it? How keep it?" Every 8abboth deseorster. in this community should have been present to hear this topic. After this a paper was read by the sec retary, on "The Modern Temperance Movement, that had been prepared and sent by Rev M L Melick, of Oma ha, who could not be present. We then listened to a most instruct- and encouraging report of the recent General Convention of the W H & F M society by Miss Elizabeth S Haase, ho had just returned from that con vention held at Dixon, 111. Rev Kistler of Benson, who was to speak about the "Missionary Growth and Outlook of the Church" in general, was absent on account of sickness. Instead Dr Groh gave a fine history of the rapid grotttu of the Lutheran church in this country in the period over which his ministry has extended. At the business session following, Rev Oberholtzer was elected president and Rev L J Powell, of West Point, secretary and treasurer for the next year. At th evening session Dr Groh preached an instructive sermon on Faith. After which resolutions of thanks were extended to the congrega tion and choir for entertainment and singing and the generous hospitality Bhown to all who were present at t hit conference.
