PIIAYEK BEFORE ASCENDING TUB MATTERHOKN.
One of the grandest mountain peaks in the world la the Matterhorn, which
rises to a bolght of 14,835 feet between the canton of Valals, Switzerland, and'
the Vol d'Aoata, In Italy. Many have been the lives sacrificed in scaling this
magnificent peak, and many are the narrow escapes from death recorded.
On the way to make an ascent of this perilous mountain it is usual for climb
ers and their gulden to stop at one of the many wayside shrines to offer a
prayer for safety on their expedition. The accompanying illustration, taken
from the Illustrated London News, depicts such a shrine. The scene la a
beautiful one, showing in the foreground a touching net of fulth and devotion,
and in the background the flashing white peak of the mountain on which the
climocrs are about to venture their lives.

On the other Ljd, the United States
leads the world in doctors, dyspepsia

Australia, iVhere they eat even more
meat than do Americans.
In Bulgaria, with a population of
only 2,500,000, where the mass of the
people live on sour milk and black
