ers have. The mare will weigh about
1000 pounds, is a dark dappled gray,
a perfect beauty and answers to the
name pf Lilac. Among some of the
many things her owner has taught her
are to shake hands, tell the days of
the week 'and also how many she will
work, lie down and roll over, cake walk
in harness and answer questions yes or
no by a shake of the head . She has
only one bad habit and that is that ihe

Sioux City Journal, 14th: George
L Carter and A M Green, deputy fish
and game wardens, left yesteday to
seine out the small ponds and bayous
in tbe vicinity of Crystal Lake. All
the game fish taken from snob ponds
will be transferred to the waters of
tbe lake, so they may live through the
winter. The amall ponds geuorally
freeze to the bottom, thus destroying
many fish that might be saved... -A
marriage of iuterest to Sioux Oityans
was that of Mrs Katharine J Van
tloven, formerly of Sioux City, to
Daniel J Splane, of Chicago, on the
evening of December 11, iu the rectory
of the Holy Name cathedral, North
State and Superior streets, Chicago,
Rev M F Fitzsimmona officiating.
The bride, who was gowned in a hand
some white broadcloth suit, was at
tended by her niece, Miss Nell Davey,
of Jankssu, Neb. Her elder son, Har
ry J Van Hoven, eoted aa beat man.
Ihe ceremony was witneased also by
her younger son, Frank Van Hoven,
and a few immediate friends. At the
the auditorium annex a wedding din
ner was served. Mra Van Hoven is
the widow of Theodore Van Hoven, a
pioneer cattleman of this seotion
and one of the fpundera ot the
Sioux City stock ' yards. She has
been a frequent visitor to Sioux City
and is still a taxpayer here and in Da
kota oounty Nebr. Mr Splane is
vice president of the Panama Portland
Cemenent company, with headquarters
in Chioago. Mr aud Mra Splne left
for a short trip through tbe south, after
which they will take no their residenoe
in Chioago.

to move to Wynol, where Mr MoCor

They expect to go right away. . . .The
railroad from Ferry Switch to the
Omaha depot in South Sioux Sioux
City will be double tracked. At pres
ent the Burlinglou traina are switched
to the Omaha track at Ferry Switch,
and it is necessary for the roads to
koep dity and night operators at the
switch, aud to register all trams on
both ronda at that place. By building
an additional track on the north side
of the main line of the Omaha it will
be possible to get the Bnrlingtou
tiains to the Omaha depot iu South
Sioux City without interfering in any
wav with traius on the Omaha line,
and at the same time do away with
the nectsHity of a topping at Ferrv
Switch aud maintaining a station
there When that change is made, all
the work can be done at the Omaha
depot, aud the roads will keep day
and night luen on duty there. It is
expected to bundle the business in
that May until the new bridge, the
Burlington buts it is going to bu Id is
completed.
