Miss Mercedes Shute, daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Shute, of Sheri
dan, Wyo., and a student at the Col
orado Teachers college, Greeley,
Colo., was a week-end visitor to our
city, en route to St. Paul, Minn.,
where she will visit relatives. She
was the guest of Mrs. A. D. James,
4421 South Twenty-sixth street.
Mrs. John Adams will visit friends
in Nebraska City next week.
Adams’ New Novelty orchestra left
Sunday morning to fill engagements
in Kansas and Nebraska during the
holidays. They will be gone until
early in January.

The Girls’ Friendly society of the
Church of St. Philip the Deacon, has
provided three baskets to gladden the
hearts of three needy families at
Christmas.
Miss lone Pinkett, a student at the
University of Nebraska, is spending
the holidays with her aunt and uncle,
Mr. and Mrs. H. J. Pinkett, 2118
North Twenty-fifth street.
St. Philip’s Men’s club were the
guests of Dr. Craig Morris, 3044
Manderson street, Tuesday night. An
interesting address was given by the
Rev. E. J. Seeker, vicar of St. John’s.
Three members of St. John’s Men’s
club, Messrs. Disbrow, Cash and No
voti, were also guests.
Dr. Craig Morris has been called
to St. Paul, Minn., by the serious ill
ness of his father, David Morris.
The funeral of Thomas Moore, aged
73 years, who died December 8, was
held December 12 from Joseph D.
Lewis mortuary. The Rev. Mr. Fort
officiated. Deceased is survived by
his daughter, Mrs. O. C. Oglesby, Mrs.
Gaskins, and other relatives. Inter
ment was at Prospect Hill cemetery.
The funeral of Mrs. Bendel Hawk
ins, aged 80 years, of 2611 Jefferson
street, who died November 30, was
held December 3, from Mount Olive
Baptist church. Rev. E. H. McDon
ald officiated. The deceased is sur
vived by her daughter, Mrs. Dorenda
Blaekson, and other relatives. In
terment was at Graceland park cem
etery.
The funeral of Mrs. Julia Math
ews of 1316 South Twelfth street,
who died December 11, was held
Tuesday, December 13, from the Jo
seph D. Lewis mortuary. Rev. Z.
B. McGee officiated, assisted by Rev.
John Garner and the Rev. Mr. Wag
ner. She is survived by her daugh
ter, Mrs. Pear. Interment was at
Mount Hope cemetery.
TRUSTEE HELPERS’ CLUB
HOLDS SUCCESSFUL MEETING
The Trustee Helpers’ club of St.
John’s A. M. E. church held an in
teresting meeting Monday night at
the residence of Mrs. Kate Wilson,
517 North Thirty-third street. A de
lightful program was rendered under
the direction of Mrs. John Adams.
Current events were ably presented
by Mrs. Wilson. Instructive ad
dresses were given by Miss Fannie
Tumlin of Des Moines, la., and Mrs.
J. D. Lewis. Mrs. Ardena Watson
contributed a reading. Radio music
added to th* program.
The club will give a Christmas
party at St. John’s church, Monday
night, to which the public is cordially
invited. Mrs. Hiram Greenfield is
president and Mrs. Martha Taylor
Smith, secretary of the club.
CHRISTMAS SERVICES
AT ST. PHILIP’S
The Christmas services at the
Church of St. Philip the Deacon will
begin with the midnight mass Christ
mas Eve. This service will begin at
11:45 p. m. and end about 1 a. m.
Special music and brief sermon. Holy
communion 7:30 a. m.; Church school
at 10 a. m.; eucharist with sermon,
11 o’clock. All communicants of the
church are requested to give a special
Christmas offering.
Monday, St. Stephen’s day, holy
communion, 8 a. m.; Tuesday, St.
John’s day, holy communion, 8 a. m.;
Wednesday, Holy Innocents, holy
communion, 8 a. m.; children’s festi
val and Christmas tree at 7:30 p. m.
Y. W. C. A. NOTES
The public is invited to attend a
Yuletide musical tea, Thursday, De
cember 29, from 4 to 7 p. m., at the
North Side branch of the Y. W. C. A.,
2306 North Twenty-second street,
given by the board of management.
An interesting program will be ren
dered during the receiving hours.
Miss Nancy Pharr, dramatic reader,
will give several readings; “Bessie’s
Christmas Eve Lark;’’ “Where Do
You Live?” Mrs. Pearl Ray Reese,
will render a vocal solo, and other
music numbers will be given by well
known talent of the city. Refresh
ments will be served, and a silver of
fering will be taken. Come out and
bring your friends.
The excellent numbers rendered a£
the Central Y. W. C. A., at the Christ
mas vesper service were especially
appreciated and much credit is due
Mrs. Louise Scott and Mrs. C. B.
Burton, members of the religious and
general educational committee, for
securing the Bel Canto choral club
of St. John’s church, and the ladies’
quintet of Mount Moriah Baptist
church. The charming personality
of Miss Delite Hollett, educational
secretary of the Central branch, was
largely responsible for the splendid
success of the affair. Mrs. R. K.
Laurie, assisted by Mrs. Viola Cole,
and Mrs. Mara Mims, with the effi
cient aid of the Girl Reserves of the
North Side branch, rendered excel
lent service during the social hour.
Mrs. Hiram Greenfield, chairman of
the religious and general educational
committee, assisted at pouring tea
and is especially grateful for the fine
co-operation given by Miss Ruth O.
Collins, acting branch secretary, and
members of the board of manage
ment, with the members of the North
Side branch. Mr. Joseph Thomas
gave several numbers as an unexpect
ed treat added to the program.
MEDICAL AUXILIARY
The Medical auxiliary met with
Mrs. Price Terrell. Mrs. J. H. Hut
ten presided. Mrs. S. B. Northcross,
South Omaha, was welcomed as a new
member. Mrs. Price Terrell, chair
man of the benefit card party to be
given December 21 at St. Benedict’s,
reported that the tickets were be
ing sold and friends out of the aux
iliary were offering to do what they
could to make it a success. The meet
ing adjourned to meet with Mrs. Her
bert Wiggis, January 10.
THE TRI-ARTS CLUB
The Tri-Arts club met Sunday, De
cember 18 at the Y. W. C. A. The
main topic for discussion was the
selection of two more persons as
sponsors. Mr. Toby James and Mr.
T. P. Mahammitt were finally elected.
Theodore Bell and Herbert McCaw
acted as tellers. The club has decid
ed to make up some Christmas bas
kets for the needy and each member
is to bring some edible.
After all the business was complet
ed, Miss Mable Anderson gave a hu
morous dialogue on “The Christmas
Hint.” Then Miss Thelma Norriss
gave Wendell Phillips’ oration “Tou
issant L’Overture.” The club ad
journed immediately after the short
program.

proving from a recent accident.

Dean Monday night.

at Quinn chapel A. M. E. church !
Tuesday night, December 27.
Regular services at Quinn chapel
Sunday morning. At night a number
of students rendered a musical and
literary program, which was greatly
enjoyed.
Regular services were conducted
at Mount Zion Baptist church Sunday.
The student body entertained the
several representatives of our group,
who were in attendance at the Na
tional Student Federation, to a party
in Mason hall last Saturday flight.
We wigh all our readers a merry
Christmas and a happy New Year.
