MARCONI DEVELOPS PLAN
TO SEND CHEAP MESSAGES
Minimum of Electrical Current
Will Be Needed When New
Waves Are Used.
Another great step In the develop
ment of wireless telegraphic transmis
sion has been realized, says Senator
Marconi, who has returned to London
after a two months' experimental
■nilse In his yacht, according to a
London dispatch. A system has been
evolved by the Italian Inventor where
by wireless messages are transmitted
with a minimum of electrical power,
and at very low cost.
"We have transmitted messages up
to a distance of 2.2O0 miles, not only
vlth a very much smaller amount of
bower and energy, hut faster and more
cheuply than with the ordinary system
of long-distance wireless." said Senator
Marconi.
“When the new system is adopted It
will mean that a power station for
long-distance work can lie erected at
much less cost than at present. 1 have j
telegraphed on this system from Cape j
Verde island, off the African coast, to j
London. To send messages dear!;.' ;
and more rapidly over those 2."no miles |
*ook less ilower than a message from
London to Paris by llie ordinary j
methods."
Senator Marconi explained f'-at
these advantages were gained by the
ntillriition of waves that have not lie
fore been used. Given the necessary
mechanical element, he said, messages
could he sent clearly seven times faster
•ban the present rate, and that the
public and the newspapers ultimately
would have the henetit of much cheap
er commercial charges. Ilia opinion Is
Glut wireless Is only In Its Infancy, and
that the future has in store greater
marvels than have been re veal cl In
the past.
Commenting on recent experiments
conducted by American inventors look
ing to privacy In wireless telephonic
conversation. Senator Marconi said he
was afraid such an achievement was
still far off. “I do not say that wire
less telegraphy ever will be an abso
lutely private means of transmission,
hut will say that in the future It will
be possible lo make It much more dltli
cult for any one to get messages n it
Intended for them."
AMERICAN EXPLORERS TO
EXCAVAT ED CITIES
Carnegie Institute has developed
plans for a series of expeditions to ex
cavate tiie ruins of ancient Maya ciiies
in tlie hope of revealing the secrets of
that hurled civilization, says a Wash
ington dispatch to the New York lter
aid
The institute has been sending
yearly e.xtreditlons for the last decade
or so. hut tlie next expedition will start
next January and will be the largest
| and most Important archeological ven- ,
litre ever attempted on this continent. !
Some of the best known scientists of
America and Europe will head the
various departments of tlie expedition
and their discoveries may literally turn
i present conceptions of primitive Ins
I tory upside down.
Permission has been granted by the
, governments concerned for the Ameri
I can scientists to investigate ruins of
i the Maya cities in the Jungles of Mex
i Ico and Guatemala. Dr. Sylvanus G.
| Moreley, associate of the Institute In
' Middle American arcliPoiogy. who has
i been conducting explorations and
studies in middle America for nine
years. Is now in Yucatan to begin pre
liminary work of clearing tlie brush
from the group of structures which will
form the first study.
No centure In recent years has ex
cited so much Interest in scientific
circle's as the institute’s announce
ment that It intends to excavate the
ruined cities of what Is generally ac
cepted to have been the first human
race to Inhabit this continent. Just
what the explorers will find no man
can predict, but officials of tlie insti
tution predict that tlie story burled in
: the tropical jungles of Mexico promises
I to become one of the most intriguing
1 chapters In primitive history and to
| place King “Tut" far In the back
ground.
The Maya civilization, an aboriginal
i race, flourished on this continent cen
turies before the coming of Christ. It
reached an amazingly high state of In
tellectual culture for that period and
then disappeared with a completeness
limit has baffled science.
SONNY THOMPSON’S
ENTERTAINERS
Clever Colored Syncopationists Fea
tured With “Let’s Go!” Coming
To the Gayety Saturday For
One Week’s Stay.
Next week’s offering at the Gayety
theatre should be of sufficient appeal
to its pat'ons in this city to warrant
a visit of the majority of them to that
nonular plavhouse. Especially will its
at'ractiveness appeal to the ladies
who are in the habit of attending the
daily matinees.
“T.et’s Go,” the offering in ques
tion, i« one of the really pretent;ous
shows of the season. It carries an
equipment of fifteen magnificen’
scenes and one of the most expensive
wardrobes of exquisite costumes on
the road. There is a host of trtdv
prettv chorus girls, who not only dis
play their many pretty costumes to
the greatest advantage but who hnvo
been selected for their dancing and I
wn'ring ahilitv as well. Particular! ■
true is this of the former, the me-n
I n*-s having been trained in a manner
dancing that rivals the famous
T>Mer Girls. In fact they are a gin
gerv, good-looking lot who are in
keeping with the superb costumes ard
scenic investment of the big produc
tion.
As to principals, they are all of the
most satisfactory type and handle the
splendid material furnished them in
the book of Allen Spencer Tenny in a
finished manner that leaves nothing
to he desired. Headine the list are
Pat White and Manny King, two very
clever comedians. Pat White, togeth
er with his trick dog, Jack, leaver
never a dull moment while thev ace
on the stage, while Mr. King not only
is a verv amusing comedian, but a
splendid violinist as well. Kittv Mad- 1
ison is a lively dancing soubrette with
plenty of pep. Burton Carr, last sea
son with Jack Reid’s show, has a
pleasing tenor voice and looks well;
Nan Palon, the prima donna, who
comes direct from vaudeville, is the
possessor of a marvelous voice and
good looks; Flo Kane is a jazz singer
of real merit; Joe Berrett, the char
acter man, can also sing as well as
act, while Helen Flynn, a classical
dancer who is only eighteen years old,
has just finished a season with Geo.
White’s famous “Scandals.” Then to
round off the bill at the Gavety the
atre the producer of “Let’s Go" offers
Sonnv 'Thompson’s Entertainers, one
of the greatest aggregations of col
ored singers, dancers and musicians
ever seen on the stage. Sunday’s mat
inee starts at 3:00 o’clock.
