tertaining Club having been organ
ized some weeks ago, is progressing
nicely. The last meeting was held at
the home of Mr. and Mrs. F. S. Good
let. After the dispatch of business
the literary' committee presented an
interesting program, featuring the
works of Paul Laurence Dunhar.

The funeral of Arthur Chasteen,
who died suddenly Tuesday morning
Oct. 2, was held Friday morning, Oct.
5, from Hoffman’s Chapel, Rev. John
Albert Williams officiating. Burial
was at Forest Lawn.

Grove M. E. Church, Twenty-second

Margaret Dickerson, little daughter
of Mr. and Mrs. Charles W. Dicker
son, is at the University hospital,
where she underwent an operation
for appendicitis. Rhe is reported as
doing nicely.
The Girls’ Friendly Roeiety held a
very interesting and largely attended
meeting at Rt. Philip's rectory on
Monday afternoon. Mrs. Diggs, dio
cesan pro“ident of the G. F. S., paid
a visit to this branch and talked with
the girls. There will he a joint Hal
laween party of all branches at Trin
ity Cathedral on Oct. 31st.

Mrs. Elmira Owens of DuQuoin,
111., after a very pleasant visit with
her daughter, Mrs. J. W. Gatus, left
for her home last Tuesday. She was
accompanied by Mrs. Gatus who will
visit relatives and friends for a
month.

Melissa Tirtle of Denver, Colo., are
visiting at the home of Mr. and Mrs.

are en route to Kansas City, Mo.

Mrs. Chas. T. Smith, on N. 28th St.,
last Thursday afternoon.

LINCOLN NEWS AND COMMENT
Mrs. J. H. Jenkins left for her home
in St. Louis, Mo., last Saturday, going
by way of Omaha, and was accom
panied as far as Omaha by her sister
in-law, Mrs. Robt. M. Johnson, who
visited Mr. Robt. H. Johnson, Jr., and
his wife.
Rev. A. L. Weatherly, a white minis
ter, formerly of this city as pastor
of the Universal church, lectured to
a fair crowd of white and colored in
Auditorium of McKinley School last
Thursday night under auspices of the
N. A. A. C. P. Mr. Weatherly is a
man of exceptional qualities end is
favorable to our group in so many
ways that we feel sorry that his
charge is In a foreign field which
prevents him to work in our midst.
Mr. Weatherly talked along the lines
of aptness of the mind of man, saying
that God had given man a human
mind, no doubt equal in every way,
but man was urged to cultivate it,
therefore causing his brain cells to
fill up that he may think and take In
knowledge which has caused the world
to be so wise today, and he further
stated that this does not apply to white
man only but to the colored man as
well. His lecture was well rounded
out and all hearers enjoyed it.

A. A. ('. P., is especially commended
in getting as splendid lecturers as
Rev. Mr. Weatherly to present to the
people, ft suffices to say that the N.j
A. A. C. P. will take on new life in
this community.
Mrs. W. L. Todd attended the execu
tive board of the New Era Baptist
Association at Omaha last Tuesday.
Mrs. Maude Gates was taken sud
denly ill last Tuesday night and was
rushed to the St. Elizabeth’s hospital
where a surgical operation was per
formed on her Wednesday morning for
some abdominal ailment. According
to last reports the patient is doing
fairly well.
Earl I. McWilliams left laet week
for Montreal, Canada, where be expects
to reside for a while. His wife, who ia
visiting in Washington, D. C., will
Join him there.
Mrs. P. Richards, traveling mission
ary, visited her sister here this week.
She worshipped at Mt. Zion Sunday
night and told of her travels since
leaving here four years ago. She left
for Denver Monday.
The Busy Bees had quite a success
ful Bocial and supper at the church
last Tuesday night.
Messrs. R. W. Walker and Jas. R.
Shelby have moved their lunch car
from South Eleventh to Twenty-first
and 0 streets, the lot where the car
stood so long was sold to be built on.
Services at the A. M. E. church
were conducted by the pastor last
Sunday, who preached during the day.
Communion was served at morning
worship. The Sunday school and A.
C. E. society were well attended.
Rev. G. W. Carter of Newman M. 3.
church cuducted his services as usual
Sunday. His folks attended in fair
numbers.
Covenant and praise meeting was
featured at Mt. Zion Baptist church
Sunday morning. The Sunday school
and B. Y. P. U. enjoyed a program
Sunday night. At 8 p. m. Rev. H. W.
Botts preached a most excellent ser
mon; after which a large crowd of
members partook of communion.—Big
financial rally next Sunday.
Rev. G. W'. Carter of the Newman
Methodist church will preach for Rev.
H. W. Botts at .3 p. m. next Sunday.
All pastors and churches are invited.
Andrew Nettles, aged 83 years, died
at his home, First and E streets, Mon
day at 10 a. m. from a stroke of para
lysis brought on seemingly from ef
fects of recent injuries. He leaves to
mourn his loss three sons, Bud of Bil
lings, Mont.; William of Colton, Cal.,
and James of Lincoln; one daughter,
Lovey Perry of Lincoln. Funeral ar
rangements will be announced later.
