MANY ACTIVITIES

!iaie not made marked progress. The
grocery stores are greatly handicap
ped. They have to pay from ten to
fifteen per cent more than their white
competitors, even when buying [or
cash from wholesalers. it may ho
that this is because these grocers buy
11 small quantities. However, they
are thus handicapped and their suc
cess is made difficult, if not impos
sible, in the long run, in competition
with grocers who can sell at a profit
at a smaller figure than they can buy.
The real estate men are making pro
gress as they gain knowledge and ex
perience in the business, ami a few
of them are forging ahead in then
work. Expressmen are numerous.
One of them told this story a few
days ago: Some years ago a school
teacher told the class of which I was
a member, if you wish to make money
don’t become a doctor or a lawyer,
but buy yourself a dray. A great;

wise we could not have so many in
this business.” Our tailoring and
cleaning establishments are succeed
ing.
The undertakers are ''making good.”
Soon r late everybody has to give them
his patronage. The druggists are do
ing an excellent business and they
are sufficiently numerous to succeed
and not more so. Our new and sec
ond hand furniture stores are a suc
cess. In amusement places the group
excels numerically. It Is a fact., also,
that there is more money invested in
thege establishments than in anj
other business in which this group is
engaged. Out of this, it Is hoped,
business experience may be gained to i
the end that tt may he applied later
In other lines of business, as well as
this The Job printing business is
new, but promising.
The largest undertaking so far at
tempted is a chemical manufacturing
business, which can be made a very I
great, success, if the group will sup
port it. It Is engaged in manufactur
ing proprietary remedies and tooth
paste.
The total capital Invested In these1
businesses is much larger than the :
casual reader would guess at first,
running up into hundreds of thous
ands of dollars.
If It were possible to concentrate
the economic power the group pos
sesses as a basis of group develop
ment, progress would be very rapid.
This will he done just ns soon as we
learn the value of doing It. and not ,
sooner.
It is quite easy for someone who
has had years of business experience
to say what the other man should do,
but it Is quite another thing, handi
capped as this group Is, to succeed
in business In open eompetition with
the advantaged class. When the.
group overcomes the handicaps un
der which It labors now, it will be a |
bettor asset than it now is to the
community and to the country.
This group will have its stoves
Brha.ll at first, but larger as the years
go by; its loan associations and its I
banks, and other businesses, here in
Omaha. Thep thlngR are not. so far
away as one may now suppose them
to he. Out the thing must be fought j
out largely by the group itself. No
ultimate victory can be achieved In j
business or otherwise in any other
way.
