Then he added: “These colonies could then be sold by the Allies to tbe United States for a sum in the neighborhood of from $5. 000,000 to $7,000,000,000, the Allies re ceiving credit in this amount against their indebtedness to the United States. In this way Europe would pay a large part of her debt to us. She would then be in a position to pur chase from us supplies for her rehabi litation. the foreign exchange situa tion would be relieved and reconstruc tion would proceed rapidly. “The United States would receive for very dubious assets a million gquare miles of territory—about one third of her total area—and an oppor tunity would be offered to white and colored Americans to do their part in co-operating with other nations in the development of that wonderful conti nent. “I do not believe that America will seek to evade responsibility when the opportunity offers for sharing in the responsibility for bringing about world improvements Many colored Ameri cans are interested in this problem and would welcome an opportunity of sharing in the work of upbuilding and developing the African continent. The time may come when we may yet see a great, free African repnblic, which, with its material achievements and moral triumphs, will renew In Africa and surpass there the glories of the golden age when the civiliza tion of the Egyptians was the greatest in the world." Senator France declared that the race problem will never be solved by consistent and concerted efforts to keep tbe colored races in ignorance and degredation, by depriving them of schools and sanitary surroundings, by recriminations, hatred, prejudice, ven- | geance. violence, lynchlngs and burn ings at the stake. He said It must be solved by fearless facing of the facts, with recognition that the unchanging principles of liberty and Justice are “verywhere and at all times applicable, with an acknowledgment of the fact recognized by all the great antbopolo gists that the colored races have great mental and moral capacity, and that they were created to fulfill a great destiny.
