JENKINS, Treasurer | PATRONIZE THE MONITOR ADVERTISERS BUSINESS PROGRESS AT NATIONAL CAPITAL A New Group of Race Leaders Who Stress the Business and industrial Side of Life—Desire Man in Treas ary Department In Touch With financial Interests. — PEOPLE ARE AWAKENING (By Charles E. Hall) WASHINGTON, Nov. 17.—The in corporation last week of the Pruden tial bank, a commercial and savings institution with a capitalization of $100,000, and the incorporation of the Standard Investment and Develop ment company for $150,000 gave the members of our group in the District of Columbia a total of nineteen re cently organized corporations with an aggregate capitalization of $2,880,000. Included in this list is a hotel and | apartment house proposition, two | banks, a broom factory-, two building and loan associations, a farming and merchandise company, a housing cor poration, a life insurance company, a theatre corporation, a commercial company owning valuable property, an investment and development com pany that recently purchased eight stores for $120,000 in the busiest part of the uptown section, a suburban pleasure park association, a motion picture corporation, several realty corporations whose recent purchases1 of large and centrally located apart ment houses have greatly relieved the housing situation among our group, and several co-operative organiza tions that are conservatively invest ing the money received from the sale of stock to members of the race. The great change among our peo ple in the city of Washington will startle the politicians and office hold ers who will come into their own with the new- administration, and unless they come here with something on their minds more important than the story of David’s sojourn in the land of the Philistines, a scientific knowl edge of how to win applause, or high brow information on such subjects as the increase and diffusion of knowl edge in regard to the nature and properties of atmospheric air in con nection with the welfare of man, etc., their presence will be unnoticed in this community, unless, of course, their bank rolls permit them to be come identified with some of the nu merous business concerns. The day has passed w-hen a register of the treasury-, a recorder of deeds or a minister to Dahomey can impress the busy Washingtonian with his impptg *ance, and it is hoped that the new administration will bring with it a few colored men of affairs, rather than a bunch of pompous phrase^ makers. The business element would like to see one of our race appointed to a position in the United States treas ury, whether as register or something else, that would fit him for the man agement of a big trust company or a surety bonding company upon his re tirement from office. They want to ee appointed a live wire man who will make a connection, while in of 'ice, with the big financiers of^ the ountry, and bring to the race the re sults of his contact, study and experi ■nce. The producers are tired of »ee ng big jobs that could, and should, be turned into assets for the entire race, thrown away on little men who do not realize the value of their op portunities, and whose chief contribu *ion to the race is talk.
