    SIDE FLARE FROCK
Garment Is Regarded as Domi
nant Note of Spring Styles.
Outfit May Be Made to Combine Satllli
Taffeta, Velvet and a Sheer
Material.
The frock shown In the sketch,
while designed for present seuson
wear, really is an intimation of the
silhouette that Is now regarded as the
dominant note of spring styles. In
Other words, says a fashion authority,
frocks showing a side flare, extreme
or moderate, with distinctly flat front
and back effects, will hold the centei
of the sartorial stage. The tendency
is to feature a side fullness rather
than a flare, as there is a generous use
of material without wiring or other
artificial re-enforcement. The result
Is the fullness described, in many
cases a sort of bunching of the fabric
by means of plaits and gathers.
The frock sketched may be made to
combine satin or taffeta, or even vel
vet and a sheer material, such as
georgette, chiffon or net, and it would
be quite smart for afternoon wear.
Present season frocks worn by
Americans generally show long sleeves
—that is, except the frocks designed
for evening or dressy afternoon wear.
According to all indications, however,
the prejudice that has existed in the
minds of American women against the
display of a long expanse of bare arm,
except In the evening or in the privacy
of the home, has at last been dispelled,
and next spring will see women wear
ing wool frocks of the tailored or semi
tailored type, equipped with sleeves
that are well above the elbow.
It Is also announced that plaids will
have a very strong run of favor in
tailored street apparel in the spring.
Many very smart and also very strik
ing plaid wool fabrics are being
brought out to meet this demand. Or
perhaps the demand has been created

to take care of the handsome plaids
that have already been woven. In any
event plaids are to be worn, and they
will not at all, as is usually the case,
be confined to garments for the mem
bers of the younger set.
FIND MANY USES FOR SATIN
Fabric Affords Most Fetching Cos
tumes That Make Strong Ap
peal to Milady's Heart.
Satin is quite the most fetching thing
Imaginable. That collar is undeniably
striking; the sleeve treatment Is most
unusual, and there’s a delightful rip
ple to the skirt. The collar is noth
ing more than an inoffensive roll at
back, but it crosses and then length
ens considerably In front. Why, ft
extends all the way down to the hip
line. A rounded snip of the scissors in
an otherwise prosalcly tight-fitting
sleeve will achieve this sleeve novelty.
The charming ripple of the skirt is se
cured by being more generous with
the gathering at the sides than at
front or back and then curtailing the
length to either side slightly. In
black and white the model would be
compelling.
A Negligee Easily Made.
Here is quite the easiest made neg
ligee Imaginable. It goes something
like this: One length of material over
each shoulder tacked back and front
to form a V-neck. Just at the termina
tion of the V there appears an inverted
tuck gathered to secure fit at a slightly
raised waist line. The sides are seam
ed well up to the waist, then onward
they are left open to provide the gar
ment with a modishly comfortable
sleeve. Really it is the simplest thing
imaginable, and the most fetching
when completed.
Abbreviated Sleeves.
Both dinner and evening gowns have
sleeves which are hardly more than
caps.
FUN FOR ALL
These youngsters had the time of their lives at a party
given recently by Community Sendee in the Thomas Ganet
Settlement House in Wilmington, Delaware. There were
grownups at the party, too. But, they were there just to help
the young folks enjoy themselves. Community Sen ice in
cludes colored men, women and children m its work through
out the United States. The work for them is carried on by
colored workers trained by Community Service.
