The above Is an authentic snapshot of a scene in Buffalo Bill's camp. It shows Black Fox in the midst of an exciting game. The popular chief Is a passionate devotee of the game and has attained great proficiency in its many intricacies. flffbat Wa It the Preacfyer's text? "Seven people out of ten can not at this moment recall one of the main tenets treated In the evening sermon." It was a gray haired church-goer that made the assertion to a repre sentative of the Courier. The disserta tion just ended had been fairly pow erful, tolerably eloquent and con tained here and there gems of thought. "Strange as it may seem, people too often forget "to listen when they come to church. They look around, meditate and some of the financially inclined plot and scheme. Experiment on some of these, folks and you will find that 7 am telling the truth. "There are two factors concerned in the church inattention evil. The mem bers get in the habit of listening with out thinking or having their powers of Intellect concentrated upon matters wholly foreign to the seimon. Es pecially is this true when the preacher starts out from a familiar text, repeats a whole lot of Bible history that every one knows and elaborates the tenets of creed and the dogma of church. These things the public has heard from ear liest infancy. Throwing the thread bare and the humdrum things at a congregation produces drowsiness. The hearers want rest and they take it by Ignoring the gems of thought ladled out from the pulpit. "Then another reason applies to the personality of too many ministers, tand some of them live in Lincoln. Their work Is poor, very poor. They lack the prime requisites of securing and hold ing attention. The poor preacher fac tor is probably the stronger of the two. "I would recommend fewer preach ers, larger congregations, better and shorter sermons. Then people will listen and the pUlpit will regain a whole lot of lost prestige." But the veteran seemed to have hU subject well in hand. He stood at the end of the aisle and inquired of young and eld the text of the sermon, plead ing forgetfulness. He asked the elev enth person before he got a fragment of the scripture and two more persons were approached before there was a correct answer. "Really, I've forgotten," was the stereotyped answer of the members in terrogated. And with the reply came a look of pure unadulterated annoy ance. "Some one should Invent a medicine ..tostimulatethe autory. apparatus church-goers," was the parting shot of the critic as he proceeded towards the door. If love would only die when you kill it! But It always sits on the tomb stone and laughs at you. The girl who said she would prefer to be kissed to death probably knew that the executioner would die first.
