THE COURIER SAMUEL. TILTON. Samuel Tllton, county commissioner is a veteran of the civil war and a veteran also of the county. He came to Lancaster county in Feb ruary, 1869, locating on a farm near Panama. By dint of hard work and frugality, he has come to possess considerable property, part being a one-half section of land near Panama and a big chunk in Frontier county. Born in Star county, Ohio, April 25, 1842, his parents removed to Indiana when he was at the age of seven years. In that state he lived many years, in fact, until the time he came to Nebraska. When the war broke out he Joined the Forty-sixth Indiana regiment. After a time he was discharged for disability. Three months later he was well enough to reinlist in the One Hundredth and Twenty-eighth Indiana, and with that regiment he served to the end of the war. On April 22, 1866, he was mustered out. His was the last regimental organization in the union to leave the service. With the education he had acquired in the common school and on his father's farm in Indiana, he soori sought the far west. His father's place was not large enought for both to work to advantage and having in 1867 married Mercy Carr, he set out for the great plains. A year ago Mrs. Tilton died. A family of four sons, three of them married, survived her. In the fall of 1899 Mr. Tilton was elected to the board of county commissioners. His term ex pires this fall. He started in with a fixed determination to save all pos sible to the tax payers and he has adhered to the principle. When he undertook the office a debt of $22,356 overhung the bridge fund. This has been paid in the past two years. Last fall the fund possessed , between $2,000 and $3,000 surplus. In the first year 175 miles of grading was' doneiand in the second 225 miles. In the .'two years 114 bridges have" been built at a cost of $12,000. Of course Mr. Tilton does not presume to take the credit of this record alone, for there were two others on the board at the same time, but he thinks it a good showing.
