Six out of seven of the first games at home is calculated to

that the Pirates can play ball when they
The new players have won their way into our confidence at once,
especially McKibben. He plays ball in the field, at the bat and
on the bases.
We have some of the best base runners in the associaton.
McCarthy, McKibben, Speer and Hughes are all sprinters and
they never miss a chance to got around the sacks.
Of course we cannot now reasonably hope to win tho pennant,
but we may see the team among the first four.
One of the noticeable features of the season is that no matter
what team it is it wins games at home. Isn't it just possible
that business is mixed up iD this? The public will continually
go to see the home team if if wins at home, no matter what the
team does away from home.
Affairs in tho Western Association have been better managed
this year than in any former year when there has been a league
or association in the west. Has the fact that the clubs have
been so close together been the result of this?
We will take two out of three from Jacksonville and threo
straight from the Yellow Jackets.
Speer will be in the National league next yeafif some manager
gets his eye on him. Do you notice how the visitors stick to their
bases, even when Speer drops the ball? He is the best catcher in
the association, taking him all in all.

Wednsday evening, August 29, at which dato tho first
performance of Owon's Fairies Carnival will be given. This
entertainment, to bo given undor tho auspices of the Women's
Christain association, will bo put on with elaborate special scen
ery and handsome costumes designed especially for this specta
cle. Over three hundred children will take part in tho car
nival. The success that this production has achieved in other
cities, particularly in Omaha, has induced Manager Zehrung to
arrange for three successive evening performancss, Wednesday.
Thursday and Friday nights, with a matinee on Saturday
Rehearsals are being hold daily, and tho work of preparation
for the play which is on a largo scale is being pushed forward
with all possible dispatch. Tho opera houso is now receiving the
finishing touches and bids fair to surprise tho public on the occa
sion of the opening. Many substantial improvements have
been made, and the whole interior has beon beautifed toBUch an
extent that tho houso is, or will bo when the work is entirely
linished, almost unrecognizable. See next week's announce
ment of tho Faries' Carnival with particulars.
"Trade is rather dull on those, isn't it?" remarked The Courier
man as he noticed the largo stock of umbrellas at Mr. E. Hallott's
jewelry store. "Well, yes," replied Mr. Hallott, "tho trado on um
brellas has been slow indeed, but when that big rain comes, the ono
we have been expecting for the last month and which I think will
come soon, there will no doubt be a boom in tho umbrella business
and I am prepared for it." With the umbrellas was a nice line of
canes. "The gold headed cane," remarked Mr. Hallett, is the only
proper one this year. Gold handled umbrellas, too, aro quite popular."
Among the many things which attracted our attention in looking
over Mr. Hallott's stock was the nice line of silver spoons and forks
that ho carries. Upon inquiring concerning them Mr. Hallett said:
"I have been connected with the jewelry business since '57, 30 years
of that time being in business for myself; and I can frankly say that
I never saw the time when solid stiver forks and spoons were so
cheap as they are now. Why, solid silverware used to bo sold at
a fabulous price, and none but the wealthiest could afford it, but
now the price is so reasonable that it does'nt pay to buy anything
else. In fact it's economy to buy it and people aro beginning to see
it.
"Wo carry also a fine lino of souvenir spoons."
