Can you realize that July has gone
though perhaps no one grieves very
much 'twas such a hot, dry and dusty
month. Lincoln society is in its appar
ently normal state of summer quietude.
If my readers expect me to chronicle
that Mrs. So-and-So gave a delightful
dance at her charming home last Tuesday, at which the youth and
loveliness of the city tripped gayly to the strains of music, they will
be subject to blighted hopes and an attendant train of evils. No;
the sound of revelry by night is seldom heard now, but surely some
one will break the monotony and bid us air our party gowns once
more. Tennis is the only diversion at present. Nearly all of the
young society people are out of the city. A large number are enjoy
ing themselves climbing the mountains of Colorado and a still larger
number are at Spirit Lake.
Miss Grace Harrison of Beatrice is visiting Miss Jessie Leland.
Dame Rumor has it that a well known O street business man will
soon wed an eastern lady.
The engagement of Miss Bertie Burr to Mr. Beeman G. Dawes is
announced the wedding to occur in the autumn.
Mrs. William Clark, Miss Lottie Clark. Will Clark and Gene Brown
are at Crete enjoying an onting.
Messrs. Mark Woods, Dewese and Mockott have gone to western
Montana.
Emery Hardy and Thomas Wing are home again from Montana.
Will Johnson and Beeman G. Dawes have returned from Spirit
Lake.
Ray Welch has returned from Spirit Lake.
John I. Underwood returned Thursday from Des Moines, la.
Mr. A. W. Miller left Friday for Hot Springs.
Mrs. W. R. Kelley of Omaha hasjbeen spending the week 'with
Mrs. A. T. Iteming.
Mrs. W. A. Rankin has returned from a two week visit with friends
at Sioux City.
Dr. H. S. Jones has returned from San Antonio, Texas.
John Harley left Wednesday for St Paul, Mian.
J. E. Houtz departed Saturday for Portland, Oregon.
Mrs. Howell has gone to Minnesota where she will remain several
weeks.
Miss Elliott entertained the members of the Danle club on Wed
nesday morning. The house was effectively adorned with garden
flowers and-the daintest kind of .refreshments weie served during

H. Leavitt, J. E. Miller, J. J. Imhoff, Scott, M. D. Welch, H. H.

Lew Marshall is expected home today from Spirit Lake.
Miss Laura Houtz has returned from a pleasant visit with rela
tives in Bloomington, 111.
Mr. nd Mrs. Charles Burr have returned from Spirit Lake, where
they spent several delightful weeks.
Mrs. R. H. Oakley, Miss Maud Oakley and Miss Grace Burr left
Thursday for Colorado where they will spend two or three weeks,
Mrs. Oakley and Miss Maud having returned Wednesday from Hot
Springs, S.D.
Judge Lansing is home again after a most delightful eastern trip.
Rumor does not usually busy itself about the matrimonial aspira
tions of plans of society people in the summer; but the present sea
son is an exceptfon to the rule. It is said that at least two weddings
of young people well known in society will occur in October and
there is a possibility that this number may be doubled.
Miss Cornell left Saturday for Hot Springs. S. D.
Misb Pearle Dennis of Glenwood, la, is the guest of Miss Clara
Irwin at 1321 D street.
H. J. Whitmore has returned from Washington bringing back with
him an appointment as national bank examiner.
The Big Horn mountains have been popular with Lincoln people
this summer. At one time last week there were three large parties
from this city encamped at various points within thirty miles of
Sheridan. One of these parties composed of Mrs. Alexander Wilson,
Mrs. Marshall, Miss Wilson, Miss Marshall, Miss Mary Miller and
Messrs. John Dorgan, R. D. Robinson, Mattson Baldwin and Fritz
Westermann has just returned from Sheridan.
George Walsh, son of G. M. Walsh, returned home Friday from
Troy, N. Y., where he has been ottending the Rennselaer polytechnic
institute.
