SHIPS THAT PASS IN THE NIGHT.
"Ships That Pass in the Night," by Beatrice Harraden, is now en
joying unusual popularity. It has already been translated into
three languages.
The plot is laid in Peterahof, and to any one who has spent a
winter in the Tennessee mountains, or in California, it presents a
realistic picture. Each boarder has an ailment of some kind and
wishes to monopolize the conversation with a description of the
peculiarities of his lungs and throat
Bernardino, the heroine, is a person whose energy, like a fire in her
veins, fairly devours her 'life. It is not until health has left her that
she, like the "Disagreeable Man," and the other inmates of the hotel
realize the blessing of an active life, full of work. In the course of
time the "Disagreeable Man, who turns out to be not altogether
disagreeable, falls in love with Bernardino; but they are not as iB the
usual case
"Married amid tears and laughter
And live happy ever after."
And this is the climax of the story. The author has done some
philosophizing, but, as it is carried on in a conversational manner, it
is never heavy. True knowledge is found in our every day life, and
failure after the lapse of years is often called success. These are
not new thoughts, yet the writer has told them so beautifully in
the form of short allegories that one is impressed and pleased. There
certainly is a great deal of heart and some humor in the book, and
these two things seem the best that life can offer, and therefore -desiderata
in fiction, a colored picture of real life. C.
Peculiar to Itaelf:
So eminently successful has Hood's Sarsaparilla been that many
leading citizens from all over the United States furnish testimonials -of
cures which seem almost miraculous. Hood's Sarsaparilla is not
an accident but the ripe fruit of industry and study. It possesses,
merit "peculiar to itself."
