JOE STECHER. former cham
pion heavyweight "bone-crush-
v,. 10 VUG VI HIS lllfll r.iiiS9
has discovered that it is not alto
gether necessary .to hold a cham
pionship belt in order to rake in the
dough at the box office. -
Mecher has been touring almost
as he pleases through the middle west
and east and has had all the engage
ments he cared for. Although he
does not make public detailed data,
he says lie is perfectly well satisfied
with the financial return.
Joe is a popular athlete and. fur
thermore, is well known among the
mat fans.
It ii common gossip down on
the Fight Rialte) that Schlaifer has
pent quite a little sum of money
since his last fight and is willing
to don the mittens so that he can
gather in more coin.
Jack Dempsey's trip across the
creek may be stamped as a "pleas
ure" visit to the old country, but
you can bet your last dollar that
Jack Kearns, the champ's manager,
has a very good line on the condi
tions in England and France and the
possibilities for . Dempsey there.
According to reports received in
this country, the best seats for the
Carpentier-Cook fight in London re-J
cently brought something like $50.
There is plenty of money for fights
and fighters in the British metropo
lis, judging from this report. ;
The Ted Lewis-Carpentier fight
will undoubtedly be a sell-out. The
English are "fight crazy," and with
Dempsey on their side of the pond,
will pay well to see the champion,
Carnentier
for a rdw of restaurant stools, per
form in a ring.
So, after all, Kearns had some
thing more than just a pleasure trip
in mind when he purchased tickets
tor Jbugland.
"Cowboy" Padgett, Colorado
welterweight who meets Champion
Jack Britton here May S, wants
to secure a couple of speedy light
weights to assist him in his traili
ng for the coming battle.
Fast lightweights may assist a
little, but if the "Cowboy" ex
pects to keep up with the "Old
Man" he should engage Joe Ray,
the speedy little Chicago sprinter.
Ray holds a flock of track records
and could give Padgett a few
pointers on how to move about
According to word received from
Mike Finn, secretary of the Oma
ha Buffaloes, a 5,000 attendance at
the local lot opending day will prob
ably draw the league prize.
St. Joseph leads among the south
ern clubs with the largest opening
day's attendance. The Buffaloes
and Indians played to 3,600 fans at
Oklahoma City in the opening of the
season at the latter town.
"Mike" writes that he is getting
better, but that the doctor will not
permit him' to journey to Omaha for
the opening day. '
The first, "kid's" day at the park
will be May 1, while the first ladies'
day will be May 2.
The reason for the late starting
time, write "Mike," is that there will
be 13 days on which clubs come to
Omaha from Denver. The earliest
the visiting teams can get here from
Denver is 3:10.
