Whether Schabinyer will take an active part in the coaching of th various phases of athletics, in which he i reputed to be competent in all, depend upon the amount of admin istrative work that his office necessi tates, according to announcement made last night. The new Hilltop athletic head is a graduate of Emporia college and of the Y. M. C. A. athletic directors' training school at Springfield, Mass. He served three years as athletic head of Ottawa college and devel oped a team which was defeated only once in three years. The one defeat was administered by the Kansas Aggies, which ranks high in the Missouri valley. Good Record. His record in the last three years at the Kansas normal has even been more brilliant. His specialty is basket ball nd track. He is 25 years oltl, married and has a 4-ycar-old son. SCRAMBLED POETS - Rv "WAG The boxing game in Orcidia isn't running along very smoothly. There must be a couple rough stones somewhere. Joe Gorman. Portland (Ore.) boxer, signed a contract with the matchmaker for the local Legion to tight on next Tuesday's card. The other day Gorman was in formed that he was taken off the program. ' . Section four, paragraph six, cover ing contracts and forfeitures of the Nebraska state boxing law, is as follows: "Any club which shall, without sufficient reason, violate or break any contract entered into with any contestant or contestants, may have its license cancelled or sus pended." The only real match Champion Tack Dempsey has in sight during his trip abroad is a golf match with Georges Carpentier. The Frenchman has a vivid recollec tion of Dempsey in the ring and the eolf match was presumably his idm. Baseball is probably the most subtle excuse known to science for a man neglecting his business. It is carefully hidden tinder a multitude of other excuses. When a man has to quit the of fice about 2 o'clock in the afternoon with a headache or a jumping t00th when he has to go away early to at tend a funeral of bis mother-in-law, or when he has to rush out suddenly to cct to the bank before it closes, yoif may always find him back of first base at some ball park. ' Sheriff Gus Hyers is going to umpire the ball game between his office and the county treasurer's office. Wonder if the sheriff will arrest any of the players if they steal a base? Don'ts for Fighters, rinn't imacine you are a world- beater because your press agent booms you as such. Antles Lincoln, Neb., April 14. (Special Telegram.) "The Department of Public Welfare of Nebraska is look ing into all rumors which come into the office portraying that stables of boxers and their managers are at tempting to schedule dates for too long a period of time in order to work one man up to a high position ss a drawing card," said Secretary H. H. Antles tonight. Stories without any foundation that stables of boxers under man agement of men in close connection with one another injure the boxing game in Nebraska, in the opinion of Mr. Antles. A rumor coming out of Omaha to the effect that "Bobby" Evans of that city had been suspended or barred by Inspector Kilmartin of Omaha, is without foundation, ac cording to Secretary Antles. "In the first place," continued Mr. Antles, Evans is not licensed in this state as a manager. He received a per mit to act as a second at one bout and that is the extent of his activities so far as the department is con cerned. Furthermore, Inspector John Kilmartin of Omaha is not en dowed with powers of suspension, tnd all such matters must go through tb. hands of the head of the depart ment. Evidently this report is based cn mere hearsay. Delegates to the convention of tlic national board of approved basket ball of ficials in executive session today, de clared that alterations in the "foul" rules of the game would not be rec ommended. In' a preliminary session held last night the foul rule which has caused considerable comment this year was discussed and it was said today that delegates had not reached an agree ment on various alteration proposals. Many minor changes in the rules were to be recommended, however, and among the questions scheduled for discussion today were "time out," "stalling," and "guarding from be hind." Poor Success Marks Smith's Debut as Submarine Hurler New York, April . 15. Shcrrod Smith of the tirooklyns made his i debut as an underhanded iltnger against the Giants at the Folo Grounds yesterday and had poor suc cess. Replacing Al Mamaux in the sec ond, Sherrod started hurling in the queer style employed by Carl Mays of the Yankees, and while he had plenty of speed, the Giants took kindly : to his offerings, gathering nine hits while he was on the mound, "t Central1 Baseball Team Lincoln. April 15. (Special Tele gram.) The Cornhusker baseball team won its first home game yes terday afternoon by defeating the Wesleyan University nine, 28 to 7, in a slow, sluggish game. Errors fea tured the entire game of the Metho dists, who committed seventeen bun gles during the session and Nebraska four. Glen Munger, star husker mound artist, was on the hill for Nebraska for the first time this season. He struck out ten men in six innings and was relieved by Carman who in turn was relieved by Ziegenbein in the ninth. Rogge started the game for the Coyotes, but was so unfor tunate that Preston went into the box to relieve him. Captain McCrory of the Nebraska nine was the star of the game, scor ing five times in six times at bat on two hits. Donahoe starred for Wesleyan, scoring two of the Coy otes tallies. This was not only the first game at home for the Huskers but was also Wesleyan' s first game of the season. Ruth Against Cigarets "Babe" Ruth, sultan of swat, is opposed to boys smoking cigarets.
