Hoppe Won last night's block, 516 to 500, but Schaefcr's 48-point lead gained in the first two blocks proved too much for even the man whose brilliant play during his .16 years as champion, made him the most popu lar player in the world. Within 30 days Schaefer will 'de fend his title against Wclk?r Cochran, another "boy.wondcr." The match probably will be played here or in New York. May Help Red Sox. Some of the new follows will be a big lieli) to the Ked Son. Uugan, if he can be made to play at his best, is a great infieldcr. O'Kourkc will prove a fair hort.top, but not of Scott's caliber. Smith and Burns wilt not be the best of fielders, but will lis c. however. What, good is this strength if there is no pitching sufficiently de ceptive to keep the opposition front scoring runs at will? Burns is going to be first sacker; Dell Pratt, a fair all-around man, is billed to return to second. As men tioned above. O'Rourke will go to short field. Uugan is slated for the far corner, but he is in poor health and it mav be May before he gets into the harness. Until then Pitten ger is going to play the bag. That's another handicap Duffy must start under. The above plan does not provide for Kddie Foster, who is scheduled for utility work. However, it may not be many days after April 12 be fore Foster, finds bjmself back into the front line. Outfield Changed Often. The outfield probably will be changed often before the , season closes. Five veterans are available for duty. It is almost a certainty that Elmer Smith, the ex-Indian, will go to right. In center the two for mer White Sox reliables, John Col lins and Nemo Leibold, will have to fight it out. The logical disposal of these two would be to play Collins against left-handed hurlers and Lei bold against the others. Of the two, Collins is by far the better fielder, in fact the best the team possesses. Duffy has been experimenting with Joe Harris in left field. Harris is looked upon as a dandy swatter, but as a fielder he is something else again. ' Knowing his team's weakness, Duffy naturally has been looking well after his hurlers. He thinks Herb Pennock, the veteran left-hand er, is going to come through, blmer Myers also is counted upon as a regular. Myers was ill last season. Ben Karr, Herb Thormahlen and Allan Kusscll are the other vcter ans. Duffy Coaching Collins. Duffy has been coaching Epp Col lins, the ex-Yank hurler, in the art of slow-balling. If the Texan mas ters it he may be able to get some where, but it won't be far. "Bill" Piercy, also obtained from the Yanks, must remain on the side lines until after May 20 for keeping company with "Babe" Ruth on the now celebrated barnstorming jaunt. There is just a chance that old Jack Quinn will prove of considerable worth.
