Omaha He Iaaed W la. Nf w York, Feb. 2. The continurr! rue in alrrling, which reached $4,30 in the early liouri, a again the no table incident of the fmrncikl mar kcts today; it was accompanied this time by a ttibstantial advance on the nock exchange. Insofar at the ster ling market was influenced by other consideration than the immediate balance of exchange! the advance presumably reflected both the pas sage of the foreign debt refunding bill and the successful rounding out of the arms conference program at Washington. The strength of London exchange, which was pretty well maintained up to the last, was the more striking in that it was not followed, as a rule, bv the continental exchanges, most of which were under pressure from Europe. Nevertheless the course of sterling represents the market's ap praisal of the European situation gen erally. Work of Professional. Today'a advance of 1 to 1 point In a eonaidarabl number of Industrial ahares waa again th work of profeealonal op erators. It was undoubtedly based, how ever, on tha development at Wsshlngton and tha scattered avldenc of recovery from th indualrial Inertia. Such bidding up of prices as today's la an experiment to test the temper of th real investing publlo and it la un doubtedly bolder beuaua of the discov ery, even In the very artificially manip ulated stock market of th last few weeks, that actual holders of stocks at at any rat not dlabosed to sell. This attitude is always accepted as a algn that th Immediate financial future Is regarded without discouragement and possibly with definite hopefulness. Whatever the char acter of th recent speculation, th mar ket's general course has certainly reflect ed reversal of underlying financial sen timent from that of eight months or a year a to. Check In Money Situation. Tn th weekly federal reserve reports and tn the Kuropean bank alatoments, also a check to the rapid easing of the money aituation was reflected. 'This haa been Indicated a week or more ago by the fractional hardening of rates for accept ances and commercial paper from their lowest January level, Today'a statement for tha entire .re serve system reported a decline in the reserve ratio from 77 !4 per cent to 74 14 per cent, th change being wholly occa sioned by increase In reservea held for member kanks. .Not circulation was again reduced. Usually th lncreasa of reserve deposits Is temporary Incident of this time of year. It occurred in precisely the same way a year ago this month, but was followed after a few weeks, by a continuous movement In th opposite di rection. Decrease of 136.200,000 in th New York bank's share In the centra! gold reserve fund at Wsshlngton Indicated something of a hack flow of credits to the interior markets. MICHAELS. On alia, lie 1mh4 Wire. Chicago, Feb. 2. Reinstating of recently sold out lines by local Lulls, combined with heavy short covering mid general btop loss buy ing, advanced wheat prices rapidly to a new high on the present move ment. May was at the highest figure since October 4, the finish being at the top, with net gains of 2 S-tiQ'i 3-4c. Coarse grains were affected by the action of wheat, corn gaining l-JC't3-4c and oats 3-8c, while rye was up 2 M&i 1-2, Foreign markets led the advance early, with Liverpool up 2C2 1 Id and Bucno Aires 1 l-2(n l-2c, private cables indicating that bhorts were free buyers. The outstanding short interest the world over has proved much larger than the traders expected, this being due to the pro longed decline and the lack of con fidence regarding the future that has prevailed for months. Kxnort Demand Good. Despite th sharp advance of late, th export demand from abroad contin ued good, with aales in all poaltlona of tuO.Ooo bushels, Including 100.000 bush el of hard winter from the gulf, which I now about the lowrat priced wheat In the world. The fact that buyer have followed the bulge waa taken as Indi cating a healthy situation and tn some quarters the belief was expressed that domestic flour buyers had overstayed their market and would start to take hold freely if tho market steadied down around prevailing prices. While Minneapolis reported soma mill had msds larger flour sales, the milling demand for cash wheat was rather alow, with premiums her essler. Sales were 1,000 bushels with receipts 17 rar and an Interior mill resold 6,000 bushel that tt recently bought. The May-July spread went o 16c sgainst 14u at one time Wednesday, th greatest dltferenc so far, and there was considerable buying of May and sell ing of July. Outside Trad Light. Strength In wheat was th dominating influence in coarse grains. Outside trade was rather light, especially in oats, but both grains moved up readily and fin ished about the top. Cash houses were moderate buyer of corn to remove hedges against sales of 2:6.000 bushels lo the seaboard, although early In the day bids were reported bo- low a working basts, cash, grain laiiea, to follow tho upturn In May nd the basis was lowered c, with receipts 761 car. Oats receipts were 118 ears. Country offerings to arrlv were small. A slightly hleher price trend wes shown In oats. Trade wes light. Receipts wer enlarged, the estimate being placed at 110 cars. Country continues lo sell oats to arrive In a light way. Cash oats basis was unchanged. Domestic shipping demand wss generally improved and sales for tho day ran to liberal propor tion. Argentine shipments for the week are estimated at 840,0011 bushels, com pared with 1,303,000 bushels a year ago. London spot oats ruled unchanged and Antwerp advanced franc. Liberal sales of rye have been made to Russia of late and there 1b another order in th market, unfilled as yet. Houses with eastern and export connec tion were good buyers of futures and with the strength In wheat, an advance was easily attained. Tit Notet. New York wired: "There was a good in quiry for Manitoba wheat in the market this morning, and there was some de mand for gulf wheat, but the advance in futures placed bids for cash stuff out of line. Notwithstanding It it understood that tome liberal sales have been made to the United Kingdom overnight." A seaboard exporter wired: "There seems to be a better tone abroad, rut not many bids. Wo are now practically on parity with Argentina." German Interests as well as other con tinental buyers, are abHorbing liberal quantities of Argentine wheat, and this has caused a hardening of the English markets also. The Argentine wheat move, ment is enlarging and shipments for the week wero estimated at 3,700,000 bush els, against 1,044,000 bushels for the same week last year. Corn shipments were larger than recently also, being estimat ed at 2,400,000 bushels. The Indiana semimonthly report said that alternate freezing and thawing had done considerable damage to wheat in the southern counties, where there was but little enow covering. 'w York Sugar.
