China Hungering For Pictures, Say 8 Noted Chink China is the biggest field in the world for the extension of the mo tion picture industry and potentially the biggest and best market, accord ing; to Mr. James B. Lcong, head of the new Chung Wah Motion Pic ture company of Los Angeles. Ihe Chinese have money to spend for entertainment says Mr. Leong, and no place to spend it. Also, there are 800,000,000 of them twice as many as had been supposed and all that is needed to cash in on these un told millions of wealth is to give 'em .pictures they can understand and supply facilities for' exhibition. The Chung Wah company has start ed to cash in on this fallow field by beginning production of four features a year. The pictures will be of the nature of "The Lotus Blossom," re cently completed by Mr. Leong as supervising director of the Wah Ming company, and will be released both in America and China. ' . , : Irene Discards Ginghams : ' Irene Rich discards gingham" for silks and satins in the role of Alix in' the production,-' "The Call of Homt, directed , by Gasnier. ' Miss Rich is known" to the film colony at Hollywood as "the gingham girl," because of the many plays in which she has appeared as the country girl, the country school teacher, and the'daughter of a poor family.- She played the school teacher role in several of Will Roger's pictures, in cluding "The Invisible Power." He followed their advice by planning scenes for "The Bell Hop' which will be released soon. The rest did Larry good and gave 'him ample time to provide some sensational thrills tor "the Bell Hop," the most sensational of which appears at the climax, when Larry leaps from the roof of a barn an instant before it is blown to pieces with a heavy charge of dynamite. The comedian in his leap grasped a ladder dangling from an airplane which hovered overheat1, and the conclusion of the comedy is staged in midair, with the comedian doing acrobatic stunts several hundred feet above the ground. Created Fleet in Week A whole fleet of Chinese sampans was required in filming "Street of the Flying Dragon," in which Sessue Hayakawa is starred. Sampans tre hard to find. The studio manager asked the star how many he would r.ced. Hayakawa thought a dozen would be enough.
