Jack and Jill
Husband and Wife
Tilt BEE: OMAHA. THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 24. 1921.
; By VI Vi AN VANE.
Jck snd.Jill were entertain!!!.
A Bohemian affair, Jack loved to
term it, but Jill, more, conservative,
wn satisfied to call it just an in
formal little party.' t
It hail alt happened 10 easily, o
unexpectedly, too, o therein iay the
plrature of it.
First came, the Fittsfitlds the
couple who do wakr-colori 10 won
derfully. '
No oon wera they inside the
house than the Saltmarchet dropped
in, Graham and hi wife Marie and
Marie was chock-full or fashion talk,
for the had been abroad, and could
think of nothing but amazing frocks
the had seen in the shops in the Rue
de la Paix in Taris.
And Lilt and Anne came over,
just to say 'htllo" they told Jill,
and to top it all, Aunt Kva dropped
in for a cup, of tea. , -
Jack was xvarniing up to a discus1
sion of the horrors of the income
tax when he discerned his ' (Jill-girt,
bckonirlg him wildly from the hall.
He hastened outside.
"Whaf'j the row?! 'ie whispered.
"What in' the world will,! feed
them?" she asked anxiously.'
"Do we have to feed them?"
"Stupidl J Of course, we; have to
feed thenvVAnd there's .nothing in
the house-r-lhat is, not enough of
anything to, jo 'round," -, '.'
Jack was dumb. -, '
"Here, you come out in the kitchen
with me,'', said-'Jill,' excited by an
inspiration. .''You've - just got to
"Why not 'call 'on Aunt Eva?"
J ill-, hesitated doubtfully. - .
"CK wU'at.'can she get up for 'this
party?; I tell you, hon.thcre's noth
ing not enouRU to' go .'round."
Aw, Atvnt.fc.vi can fix something,
replied Jaclf,.wjth a splendid faith
thai men bave.jn such.. crises.
So-Aunt Eva was entrusted with
the1 job.: ; i '
"There Isn't a thing not enough
to" go 'round,! warned Jill.
"I'll oianjige,'-smiled Aunt Eva.
Is' there; magic in the touch of
a jrnaiden aunt? .
Jack andydl are prepared to swear
to it. ;, (;''; -
I'or.Vfo when "refreshments were
mnounced for the unexpected com
pany, there were, the most delightful
sandwiches, for ' one thing. Thin
.slices of well-buttered toast with
crisp bacop .slices between. .And
there was ' Turkish coffee Turkish
, because it was, piade strong, and
heavily sweetened, but1 without
cream. And in spite of the frugality
of, this fare, the novelty of the sand
wiches and the coffee quite charmed
the company..' . . ; . ;.
Jt'was midnight before the guests
departed. '". V. i v" . ' r ':( ' ' j
Aunt' Eva was flic last to go.- '

"ISome, little inventor, I'll jsay,"
baid Jack Heartily. . '.-.'
And "Aunt Eva smiled -wisely.
"I could have', done wonders if
I'd' had a head of lettuce and a little
more time," she; said modestly.
Jack was steeped .in reflection after
Aunt Eva hadgorr.
Saj hpn.'r: he' safd presently.
TYp,7 . answered,,: Jill happily,

ButterfLe.
The color, of the first' butterfly' you
sec in the spring indicates the color
of a dress you will have in thc'couise
of the year. That is a widespread
nuperstition, both in this country ajid
Europe. . In some section they say
that the new dress will be "given you
and down in Alabama thy say that
you must bite the head, off of the
butterfly and throw t it . over vonr
shoulder, in order to. be sure o(.the
new ' garment. "Ajnothcr varicnt,is
that when you see the first -butterfly
offspring -you, must ;wish forfa
new dress and you? will get it. -
There are many other superstit'ohs
with regard to the butterfly based
upon, its ancient symbolism. of the
soul and as -an insect intol.vvhitli
sould transmigrate. Thus the Solo
mon islanders frequently , chose a
butterfly as the creature into which
they -wish -their souls to pass after
death and in some ; sections of India
the butterfly is supposed to contain
the soul of a witch. But the super
stition, with regard to-the butterfly
and a-hew dress arises from no-bucn
purely mystic conception, i It .wouid
appear to be more largely, materialis
tic and based on analogy," as the
butterfly comes forth in the spring
from its crysalis'in a new dress.
There is, of course,, the;", ancient,
primitive idea that mystic is a mys
tic creature entering into the super
stition; otherwise it would not . be
able to thus control 'the future.
