THE BEE: OMAHA, SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 13. 1921. 7 M M-U.S' I C Br HENRIETTA M. FEES TUB performance of a ptgeant fuch as the one given before the Nebraska State Teacheri' asso ciation last week under the general direction of Misi Juliet McCune, an. nervisor of music in the Omaha pub. lie schpols, brings to the attention the significant place in present day activities this form of spectacular ?tnvrmance has won during the past .iU-oqd years. The word pageant has traveled long way from its original meaning of a platform or scaffold on wheels, upon which plays, or theatrical enter tainments, were given, to tts modern sense of an exhibition of enormous proportions, although it has retained throughout its course the idea of brilliancy and display. The pageant of today (like the pageant "Nebras ka," by Dr. Alexander) usually treats of historical subjects, and is a great dramatic spectacle aided by poetry and music. , ' The masque, which is similar and which was a forerunner of opera, was developed to a high plane in the 17th century, and the name of Ben Jon son appears as one of its principal writers, -v . '. The masque' then, as now, was usually upon a mythological or alle gorical subject. In these, vocal and instrumental music, poetry, dancing, scenery and lavish costumes and stage , machinery were combined, many times lavishly. l'ercy Mackaye, in his recent lec ture here, spoke enthusiastically upon the future of this form of entertain ment, especially in its relation to civic spirit, and he happily combines the two forms under the general name of community drama, which is really what it is. - i It was in 1905 that the develop ment of symbolic celebrations of this sort in England, under the lead of Gilbert Parker, inspired numerous similar efforts in Ajnerica, and it is stated-upon prominent authority that since that tiime hardly a year has passed without , some significant undertaking of this sort. All the great expositions have had them, many civic functions have been elab orate,' aud others have been featured at large educational institutions. But in the Contemplation of the brilliancy of the spectacle and its vast propor tions, the importance of music in the general scheme must not be lost sight of. In the pageant "Nebraska" it forms a veritable background for the entire action of the pageant. Howard Kirkpatrick performed a tremendous task well when he wrote and arranged the music in a consist ent and fitting manner. One is thrilled when one contemplates that so fine a performance, combining so many varied interests and the talent of innumerable, people could be en tirely local., , . i In the progress of development in these community dramas with music, the tendency is said to be "to em phasize the merely spectacular ele ments less and to mold the poetic and musical into better unity." This tendency will undoubtedly continue, and who knows, the time may come when the music of the pageant will as$HJHUM. importancaWn:,ta .it place, in. opera ;and oratorio. In what country , other ' than - a democracy should such a large musical art form be better developed an art form in which the' life of the community, por trayed by' large groups of people, should play the leading role, rather! than the life of individuals, and which' would perpetuate itself, not alone by its historic or; histrionic values, and with or without the spoken . word, but chiefly by the significance of its original musical foundation. The verdict of the New York critics upon a song recital by Emmy Destinn and the findings of Pitts Sanborn of the New York Globe is a fair sample of what appeared in the other publications. -He wrote as follows: "Miss Destinn has sung songs for us before, but she had never by her self given a song recital here until last evening in Aeolian hall. Nor had her previous singing of songs prepared us for what was" to come. It is no exaggeration to call the re sult a triumph. An audience that filled the hall, made it resound again and. again with applause. - Truly it is seldom that a singer known in a town' so long and so well as Miss Destinn, can in one evening add con spicuously to her artistit statue and her reputation, but nothing less was the achievement of Miss Destinn last night." Emmy Destinn will be heard at the Brandeis Sunday afternoon, No vember 20. Next Friday evening, November 18, at the Municipal auditorium, Ne vada Van der Veer, contralto, and Reed Miller, tenor, will appear in joint concerts They will present a varied program, consisting of solo and concerted numbers as follows: - Duet Jewel of the Madonna. This will Vke plr Thursday evening, De cember 8, at the Brande.'s theater, at 8:15 o'clock. The New York critics gave her an avalanche of tributes J upon her recent playing there. I "There has not been in the last five years, which include all the golden lads of Auer, a first playing more amazing or propitious," said the New York Sun. Another of Sidney Silber's ex cellent articles on "Mastering Mis takes." appears in the current issue of the Etude, This article deals with j Tuesday Musical to , Present Her Here style and charm in piano-playing:. Mr. Silber has an apt way of ex pressing himself, and the sugges tions he makes, although especially applied to pianists, are as applicable to. students in other lines of music study. "Style and charm are cre ated through tonal and rhythmic va riety," writes Mr. Silber. "Monotony is the arch enemy of life and art, be cause it is the cause of boredom. The, difference between life and death is the same as between art and me chanics; the former is dynamic, the latter static. Music then, which lacks personality .and individuality lacks the moving qualities which make it a living' art for living beings." bpeaking of tempo. Mr. Silber says: "Slow movements are not to be played dully, nor are fast move ments to be played agitatedly. The illusion of tempo consists in creat ing rests in motion (fast ! move ments) and motion in rests (slow movements). Keep cool, but do not play coldly at any time." Mr. bilber appeals to students tor concentrated listening, especially in phrasing and the use of dynamics, and also for careful analytical, thoughtful work in these two essen tials of fine playing. He also touches upon one of the most, abused and neglected of all piano playing, the use of the pedal. "Most of the sins against the spirit of music are trace able to poor, inadequate,- incorrect pedaling." Mr. Silber s entire article contains many valuable suggestions and will furnish much pleasure and profit for the reading of it. Among others he gives of books furnishing "solid in formation concerning the recent uses of the pedals." Clarence Cameron White, violinist, will be heard in recital at the Bran deis theater Thursday evening, No vember 17, for the benefit of Si Philips -Episcopal church. "Two port-holes, two beds real beds, and dressing tablet Why, dear, we never had such a wonderful stateroom," . "This is all right," Wart-en gazed about with approval, "And running water! That means more than anything. But it must've been an awful price," the thought of the expense dampening Helens en thusiasm. "You didn't tell me what you paid." "No, and I don't intend to! Now we're not going to travel cheap this trip we're going to be comfortable. Where d'you want this put?" as the steward dragged in a steamer trunk. ."That's yours. He can put that under your bed and mine' can be set here." While Warren unlocked the trunks. Helen fluttered about the luxurious stateroom examining all the appointments. . "Dear, 0k what a nice big ward robe," opening the mirrored door. "And all those hangers! And I love these side lights on the gray walls. The French line does everything so beautifully 1" "Well, they give you good grub I That's more important than the color of the walls. Want this tray out?" "Yes, I'm going to, unpack now everything that We'll need. I want to be all settled before it gets rough. Now if you ' have that bed, you'd better have the drawers on that side of the dressing table. ,Why there's another drawer under here for shoes. Oh, we've never had so much room." "Well. I'll go up on deck till you get things straight Then I'm com ing down and take a nap before din ner. Didn't get much sleep last night." ' "You can lie down now jf you want to. I won't make any 'noise. You ought to rest all you can on the steamer and sleep does you more good than anything." Warren yawned, stretched, looked at the bed which she had invitingly turned down, then peeled off his coat and began unlacing his shoes. "You won't want this big bolster. Put it there on top of the wardrobe on those life preservers. Oh, what lovely linen sheets 1" "How in blazes ani-I going to sleep in this light?" "I'll draw the curtains over the port holes. I can see' to unpack by this," turning on the silk-shaded wall light farthest from his bed. The room properly dimmed, War ren unresponsively submitted to Helen's hovering ministrations. She covered him up, patted his hunched up shoulder, and kissed his prickly cheek for his shave that morning had been hurried. - "Now, dear, you can sleep right on until the dressing bell." For the next hour Helen was su premely happy. She loved what Warren- called "puttering." . There was a; real joy in this unpacking and arranging their things for their greater comfort on the voyage. And Warrerjt lying there, restfully asleep, added Jo her sense of cosy content ment s And: she did not have to; hurry I With fiothing else to do, she could stop to fix all the little things, for which there had been no time in the Now Used and Easy Way to Aid Digestion, Strengthen Internal Organs, Increase Energy and Clear the Skin Instead of dosing themselves with treacherous cathartics and violent drugs, millions of chronic suf ferers from indigestion and constipation have now turned to the simple, easy and economical corrective provided by Mastin's Yeast VITAMON Tablets. MASTIN'S THE ORIGINAL AND GENUINE flurry of getting off with only three days notice. She sewed on a needed hook, tight ened a loosened button, sponged a spot from Warren's overcoat, and rearranged the veil on her steamer hat. As she had packed until two the night before and was up before seven, she soon began to grow drowsy. Hut it was not until every thing was out and arranged for the voyage that she prepared to lie down. In the luxurious comfort of her best silk kimono, bought for the dual role of bathrobe and neglige, she disgorged the over-fat bolster from the other bed and crept in. It was delicious to lie there In dreamy relaxation. There was noth ing to worry about, nothing that she had to do. All the rush and flurry was behind her; now she had only to rest The droning swish of the waves and the rhythmic throb of the ship soon lulled her to a deep oblivion. A clamorous noise. The sonorous beating of the ship's dinner gongl In the daze of a sudden awaken ing, Helen started up. The state room was quite dark, only a narrow streak of yellow showing beneath the door. Fumbling on the waif by her bed, she found the switch and the lights flashed on. Warren, row aroused, was blink ing resentfully at the light "Why this must be wroncr." glancing at his watch on the dress ing table. "It can't be half-oast sevenr "It can't, eh?" as he rolled out. "That's the dinner gong we've slept right through. Why the devil didn't that steward wake us? Now get out my clothes I You'll have to move fast." , "Dear, it. can't be I We couldn't have sleot throuch the dressing gongl" laying out his dinner clothes so conveniently hung on his side of tne wardrobe. But the steward for whom Warren rang announced in broken English that the dressing gong had rung at seven, it was now half-past, and dinner was ready. "And you're . always cackling about being a light sleeper I" growled Warren as he got into his clothes with record speed. "Yes, I should've heard that dress ing gong but I was so tiredl" "Well, you'll have to hustle now. You'll not do any primping tonight. Where're my ties?" , "Right there in your collar box." "Why the Sam Hill did you put in these white ties? I didn't bring my dress suit. Where's a black one?" upsetting the box. . "None in here." Helen, hooking up her gown, stopped petrified. " She had not brought a black dress tie 1 In the nervous haste with which she had packed, she had put in the white ones instead! "Warren, I I'm awfully sorry, but I'm afraid I forgot your black ties. I I must've been thinking about your dress suit Couldn't," appealing ly, "couldn't you wear oneof those?" "A white tie with a dinner coat? Not if I know itl Well, you are a peach 1" savagely. "This means I can't dress 6n the trip 1" "Oh, yes you can) Wait, don't un dress, yet I know where 1. can get onel The barber I They always carry a lot of things.". .- ( "Not dress tiesl People who travel -Mastm s By Millions YEA5T VITAMINE TABLET - hive some sense. Over a door farther on shone the friendly illuminated sign. Inside white-coated barber was leisurely wash nsf a hair brush. He stared amazed at her excited demand. Although he spoke a little English, she had to repeat her quest more slowly before he under stood. Then with a deprecatory shrug he showed her that he had no dress ties. Open ng a glass door he dis olaved his limited stock a few garish four-in-hands, . steamer caps, handkerchiefs, postcards and toilet articles. In sick disappointment she turned back. Was their whole voyage to be spoiled for so trivial a thing? She knew that Warren would stubborn ly refuse to dress, that every evening he would be conspicuous in his gray tweed su:t And ttfy had seats at the captain's table! It would seem like a discourtesy to him. A man came out of a stateroom just ahead. She pressed nearer the wall to let him pass, wistfully. con scious of the satiny black of his din ner coatl Of course everyone would be dressed Warren alone would be an incongruous gray figure..'
