a purple velvet dress trimmed
with silk galloons. Her hostess
was gowned in gray silk banded
with cardinal; two walking
dresses were of brown cashmere
and myrtle green silk, respec
tively, while a ball gown was a
creation involving white silk da
mask and plain blue so the
noted Mr. Godey tells us in his
Ladey's Book.
1921 Fashions have a new lan
guage entirely. Tailored suits
are mentioned in terms of mous
syne, mouchatex and veldyne,
gowns favor kaska, chiffon velvet
and silk velvet, and even colors
are wearing new names
fuschia Sorrenta and beige, for
instance. What a silken softness
clothes a modern woman in com
parison with the stays and
haircloth, featherboning and
stiff brocades of that period
around 1886.
Reminiscing is a pleasant, often
corrective habit of old estab
