' V ' BEATRICE FAIRFAX Bcttv Questions, j Dear Miss Fairfax: Do you think it is wrong for a girl of 15 to allow a boy to see her homo from school affairs? How should you accept such an invitation, and should you thank him for it when he leaves? . Could you suggest a shampoo that would be good for hair that has too much oil? what can bo used to give a sweet odor to the hair? I am 15 years of age, five feet two inches tall and weigh 1Z0 pounds. Do you think I am over-weight? What can a person do for enlarged knuckles? , . .- ' . BETTY. ' While do not consider it wise for a girl 15 to - run around" contin ually with boys, I do think It is all right for a girl of that age to allow a school boy friend to take her home from some high school affair. The way to accept is in the natural way, The boy asks if he inay take you home. You should reply, "Yes, you may," or "Yes, I would appreciate your kindness," for you snouia re gard It as a kindness when a man offers to essort you home at night Of course, if you do not wish his uompany you should tell him frank ly you have made other arrange ments foi getting home safely. But in either case you should thank him. Many men regasd it as unsafe for a girl to be on the streets at night, and feel that courtesy demands them to accompany her. - A lemon rinse or a vinegar rinse is good for oily hair. These acids cut the grease. A good brilliantine gives the hair a pleasant- odor. Your weight is O. K. If your knuckle bones are large, there is nothing you can do to make them smaller. If it Is extra flesh exercise will reduce. In trod tic Carefully. - It is the rare man or woman who succeeds in making an introduction effectively. The common fault is to pronounce the names - indistinctly and hastily, thereby leaving the per sons presented in total Ignorance of each other's identity and robbing the ceremony of its usefulness, and meaning. Deliberation and distinct enunciation are essential to the ade quate performance of this important social rite. If by chance the name of a guest escapes a host or hostess it is proper to say. quietly, "Forgive me, but I cannot recall your name at this moment," or "I am very stupid, and at this Instant your name escapes me," and then having re ceived the required information to proceed with the introduction. - July: Don't you let any one tell you you should not wash your hair frequently. If it Is dirty, it needs washing. Th Circus Parade. The crash and blare of the circus land came nearer and nearer. John nie Green craned hi neck out of the carryall ai it stood at the side of Main street, and tried to get i glimpse of the parade. Old dog Spot did not howl again, but stole out beside the bays and looked tip the streir, too. Soon a man with a tall, shiny hat on his head rode a proud, prancing horse around the coruer. And be hind him six more horses with gay plumes on their bridles nude a wide turn as they swung into view. On ton of the high, red wacoit that they drew, sat the band, all in red suits and playing away like mad. Spot couldn't help whining. Al though the bandsmen were playing the. liveliest air they knew, music al ways made Spot sad. And he was glad when the band wagon had pass cd on. Other wagons, blazoned with red and gold, followed. Old dog Spot's hair began to rise along his hack and he sniffed, growl ing. He had noticed a strange mix ture of the queerest odors. He did n't know, for a moment, whether to run away or not. "Oh, sec the tiger!" Johnnie Green shouted. "And the lions, and the monkeys, and the bear!" "See them." Spot yelled. "I say, smell thcml" He felt better when the animals in their cages had gone creaking past. And he forgot his uneasiness as he watcMcd dozens of horses, rid den by folk whose bespangled clothes glittered in the sunlight. Then came a funny man in a lit tle, two-wheeled cart, driving a don key. This was the clown. He bow ed and smiled to everybody, right and left, and even threw kisses at some of the girls. His painted face, his bag-like clothes, and his odd lit tle round, pointed hat made John nie laugh. And to Johnnie's great delight, when'the clown saw Spot he whistled. Old Spot was all for dashing out into the street. But Farmer Green wouldn't let him do that. Spot had to be content with barking at the clown. Then a man on a brisk little horse came down the street. He had a big voice. And he kept using it all the time, shouting so everybody would be sure to hear, "Look out for your horses, the elephants are coming." " And they came. The elephants came.. When "Spot saw their huge forms plodding down Main street he dived beneath the carryall again and Jewel, Flower, Color Symbols for Today , By MILDRED MARSHALL. And But nobodg thought of talking to old Dog Spot. he was just as badly frightened ai the bays, especially when a terrible tooting and screeching burst forth. Spot jumped almost out of his skin. Sewing On The Button. If girl sewt button on the clothing of a tingle man of nuiriage. able age it (s a sign that the will marry him withiit the year. Almoot anybody in the rural districts of New England can tell you that and per haps the superstition is found in other sections. At least supersti tions of t kindred nature are found in many parti both of this country and Europe. The superstition is based upon that phase of sympathe tic magic, known at the doctrine of knots. The making of a physical knot of binding torce produces, on the theory of like causing like, a spiritual effect of the same nature. As hat been said before, t the ancients what was associated in thought was associated in fact. Knit ting and sewing were placed in this philosophy in the same category as knots. AH three conveyed the idea of uniting. . When a maiden, there fore, sews a button on the coat of a bachelor the union of the button and the coat by means of the thread suggests the union of herself and the young man upon whose garment she is operating. This sets up the sympathetic magic of like producing like and the two young people are by its operation bound together, even as the button is bound to the cpat. The letting of the time within which they will be married at "within a year," is merely the suggestion of a reasonable time for the magic to take effect and is frequently omitted. The point of the superstition is that they will be married before long. Copyright, US1, McClur Newspaper Syn. Use Bee want ads for speedy results.
