Washington. Scut. 2. President Harding's' conlereiK-c on unemploy ment will be called for sorie tune betweeji September 15 and 20. Secretary of Commerce Hoover said that plans for the conference are bcine expedited as much tis pos sible in order thaf there may be no delay in dealing with the existing unemployment situation. Mr. Hoover made it known that ke has discussed the general purposes of the conference with Samuel Gom pers. president of the American Fed eration of Labor. Mr. Hoover de clared that the labor leader had giv en him assurances of co-optration. Reports from, other sources, how ever, have been to the effect that organized labor is inclined to be skeptical of the conference program. One labor leader has charged that the purpose is to develop entiment for the passage of the administration railroad bill, oi the plea that the ad ditional funds desired by the roads will make possible employment of a greater number of workers, both by the carriers and by industries lur p.ishing railway supplies. Whether Mr. Gompers will be a participant in the conference was not disclosed by Mr. Hoover, who said that the personnel would be decided by President Harding after suggestions had been ' submitted to him. Park "Hotels" Closed To Idle After Monday New York. Sept. 2. Twenty-five thousand unemployed men who have been using the parks as "hotels," will be forced to finJ other sleeping quar ters after Labor day, according to an announcement by Park Commis sioner Gallatin. All summer the parks have been filled with idle men and the work of collecting their "blank ets" bundles of newspaper s has been a task for the cleaners. More men are now out of work than were idle in the lean days of 1914. when soiip houses were only averted by, America's entry into the industrial part ot the wonu war. More men than ever before are be sieging the municipal lodging houses and the charity organizations, and the city is facing a most serious prob lem. All estimates put the number of idle at 500,000. I bent to the switch key of my car with blurred tryci for a ? minute, wondering, at piy own weak ncss the while. Partings with Dickv for so brief a period as his projected trip promised nave become common place as the years have rolled on. Rut this one had brought a sudden feeling of overwhelming loneliness. a shadow of foreboding for which I could determine no possible reason. I shook ofT the mood resolutely, however, hunted up a taxi driver, and made arrangements with him and the station nsjont to send any telegram addressed to us to the farm at once. Then, with a facility horn of long habit and experience, I shut off alt conscious thoughts and worry over Dicky and his affairs and turned my attentiou and my car toward the Dacey farm and the fashioning of our home. The workmen on the house were evidently laboring diligently, grinning cood-naturcdlv the while. at Katie, who a shrill-voiced, pctttcoatcd. comical imitation of Simon Legrce was verbally lashing them all in discriminately. I halted at a safe distance, and watched and listened. realizing with admiration thaf sound efficiency lay beneath her railing, and that no corner or out-of-the-wav moulding would be overlooked with Katie s keen eyes and voluble tongue on the job. 'Twixt Doubt and Fear. I gave the head painter a type written list with samples attached of the different papers and ceiling tints 1 wished used m the various rooms. JJickv and I had spent most of the preceding day in consultation over the wallpaper samples we had secured at Southampton. 1 he wood work was to be restored to its, orig inalivory tint, and we had selected Enjrlish landscape papers for the lower rooms, and dainty chintz pat terns for the bedrooms. "I wish everybody was as business like as this," the man said, looking attentively as the list. Then he asked me. an intelligent question or two concerning it, and I went on to the licet farm with the comforting as surance that I had no loose stitches of my own dropping to pick up. . 1 think vou may count on eel-' ting your furniture in next Saturday." the man in charge had assured me. "This is Monday. ,Now, Jet me see. Yes, that will give time for the drying. It's only a question of that. Thanks to the strike, we have plenty of workers.", . With spirits as cheered as they could possibly be with the shadow of Grace Draper upon them, I went in search of my mother-inlaw. I tolil her the good news, which she greet ed with an incredulous sniff, then sat down resolutely to the henuninp of draperies, in order that I might keep under control my speculation concerning the success or failure of Dicky's errand. ' I knew that I need expect nothing until afternoon, as "Dicky would r,ot -reach the city until nearly 10 o'clock in the morning. But it was almost 4 o'clock before the expected wire arrived. I tore it open feverishly, and then did not know whether my treacherous heart was glad or sorry at the news it contained. "Everything absolutely o.. k. Everybody satisfied with my prop- osit'on. Must stay here for a week. . Please advise both- girls to be ready one week from Wcdnes- dav for work. Love "DICKY." So he was committed to the long hours of posing with Grace and Claire Foster. I did not know which association ' I dreaded the more for him. After I had destroyed the tele gram I had bribed Jerry Ticer to watch for the taxi driver and de liver the yellow envelope to me with out Mother Graham's seeing it I sat for an hour in my room behind lock ed doors, a prey to all the fears and doubts which I had rigidly repressed for so long. A knock at the door and my mother-in-law's imperative voice cf-i fectively roused me. "What in the world are you locked in here for?" she demanded. "Robert Savarin is downstairs. He says Lil lian wishes to sec you as soon as you can go to the hospital." Legion Meti to Run Hoodlums From Cily Parks of Cincy Cincinnati. O.. Sept. 2.
