THE OMAHA SUNDAY BEE: AUGUST 11. 1918. 13 B COLE EIGHT USED AS FIRST AID CAR AT HALIFAX, N. S. Runs for Two Days After -Disaster Without. Shopping; Makes 2,200 Mile Trip; Without Incident. ' If medals were presented to motor cars for valiant service, a certain Cole Aero-Eight would no doubt be deco rated, according to Capt. Lonsdale Harrison, Halifax, N. S. j , . The ramming of a transport ship laden with powerful explosives and the disaster which followed the re sulting explosion in the harbor of Halifax was the occasion for heroic rescue .work, in which Captain Har rison participated. Relating these ' stirring experiences Captain Harrison said recently, "Dur ing the Halifax explosion I used my Cole Aero-Eight as an ambulance and for the first 60 hours Hhe engine never stopped. The snow was two and three feet deep in places and later when a blizzard devel6ped to handicap the rescuers the drifts piled up to four and six feet in 'height. "I was on duty at the time the ex plosion occurred and, filling the car with bandages and dressings, has tened to the harbor front where the effects of the disaster wire most se vere. I was on the scene 0 minutes after the explosion. Runs for Two Days. "For more than two days, the en gine of my Cole Eight ran without . stopping. When the car was brought to a halt, it was in a snow drift six feet high. We were compelled to abandon the car until morning, when the snow around the car was shoveled away and, after filling the, radiator with hot water, started it with the first turn of the starting motor. "During its entire service at Hali: fax', my car was forced to make its wa? through arc:is that would have taxed a war tank to capacity." said Captain Harrison. "The streets were covered with bodies and debris of all kinds. , Time and time again other cars appealed to us to tow them to shelter, but time was too valuable when lives and property were at stake. "It would be hard to estimate the South Side Man Sells His Business to Enlist in Navy Jack Marfisi, well known South Side plumber and business man, has enlisted in the navy. Marfisi has been in business for himself on the South Side for eight years. He owned the Stirling Plumb ing and Heating company. He' now has sold the concern and followed the path of loyalty to serve his coun try. He enlisted as a plumber. Jack follows his brother Joseph, who already is in the United States navy. Prior to leaving, Marfisi was pre sented with a service ring by the Elks, of which he is a member. Marfisi is well known on the South Side. He is a brother ot Carl Farfisi and lived at 4642 Douglas street; number of lives saved by the perfect behavior of my Cole Eight," Captain Harrison declared, "but it was said that it did the best work of any dur ing that terrible time." Captain Harrison says that this same Cole Eight carried him a dis tance of 2,200 miles from Halifax to Boston via Concord and the White mountains. During this entire trip the captain says that he never once opened his repair kit. Nebraska Oldsmobile Company Moves Its Main Offices Here The Nebraska Oldsmobile company of Omaha, Lincoln and Des Moines has recently moved its headquarters to Omaha. The large garage building located at 3126 Harney street has been leased by the Nebraska Oldsmobihr com pany and js now being converted in to a well arranged service station and parts department. A large stock of parts will be carried at this station and the building is large enough to install proper facilities for service and repair work. The service station and parts department will be in charge of J. R. O'Neill, who has zfeiCJC 3Y3tfl'St been with the Tucker organizatiDn for some time. Mr. O'Neill was formerly manager of the Omaha branch. Carl Changstrom Leaves on Western Truck Yrip Carl Changstrom left Omaha last night enroute to western Nebraska, eastern Colorado and eastern Wyom ing. Mr. Changstrom's trip is in the interest of his truck business and he plans to negotiate several dealer con tracts during his absence. Lost Motion in Springs. In inspecting the springs attention should be given to the spring hangers and other subsidiary parts. Lost mo tion, usually side play, often develops in the spring hangers and shackles. Not infrequently the bolts which pass through the spring eye will be worn nearly through in the course of, a sea son's active running. Many cars have no lubricating equipment for these small parts and they wear out rapidly under the stresses of travel. '-swfwiru $165.00 F. O. B. Traveling Men Have Plan of Raising Fund for Red Cross Work Patriotic Omaha traveling men who use automobiles in "making" their territories have hit upon a new scheme to obtain funds for the Red Cross. It very often happens in traveling from one town to another in their territories they encounter other trav eling jnen who desire to nuke the sme "objective, but have no ma chines. . They also do not care to wait for slow rtains, and the man equipped with a machien will take in the other fellow and give him the benefit of transportation. These trips in the past have been given gratis, or on the basis of fur nishing gasoline. Now the traveling men are exacting a nominal fare for the service and the money thus real ized is turned into the Red Cross treasury. The way the idea is catch ing on would indicate it is growing in popularity and j will soon realize large sums for the'Red Cross.
