damaged to some extent by high
winds, but the average condition is
considered excellent.
Oats are , doing well, the cool

prospects are good for an abundant

Cattle Offerings In the cattle division
today were $,$00 head, or 235 cars, con
siderably fewer than last Monday, when
11,732 head were yarded, and some short of
year ago, when receipts were 7,300.
Quality was not up to th standard this
morning, but packers and outside buyers
apparently had good orders and sales were
generally atrong to 10 150 higher than
Friday. Best beef cows were generally
around a dim higher, but th medium
and In-between grades of butcher stock
were Justt about steady with Friday's mar
ket. There wer but few feeder on sale
at round ateady figures. Bulls, stags and
veals wer In pretty good demand at ateady
figures.

Hogs Receipts of hogs today amounted
to 130 loads estimated at 9,100 head. Th
fact that there was practically two markets
Saturday makes comparisons difficult this
morning. The general market Is around
20 4oo lower than Saturday. Bulk today
Is $16.95017.05 with early top at $17.10.
Sheep Ther were two loads of sheep re
celved today amounting to 6,000 head. Al
though the market was a trlfl more active
than of late, trading being considerably
earlier, the market earlier is steady to
easier. A string of clipped Iambs weighing
91 pounds said at th early hour at $16.60,
another string a little heavier weighing 102
pounds sold at $16.20, and a bunch of ewes
went at 613.00.

A slight Increaae In receipts over Sunday
was noted today, arrivals totaling 17$ cars,
snd consisted of 19 cars of wheat 12$ cars
of corn, 24 cars of oats and 10 cars of
barley.
No particularly active Interest was shown
In the corn market today and scarcely 60
per cent of the offerings were disposed of.
spot figures on the three grades wer tin
changed to 2a higher, while some of the
poorer gtailra sold up 204c. Wesknesa in
the July option caused many sellers to hold
off and was partly responsible fof the light
trade. No. 3 white corn sold at $1.6301.64
and the No. 3 yellow at $1.62, No. $ mixed

Oats were stronger, all sales showing an
advance, generally Slflo. This cereal was
In good demand at the alightly higher prices.

Decrease In Visible Supply Total Brings

Chicago, May 1$. Corn bulged In value
today owing more or less to a good-sized
decrease of th visible supply total. Prices
closed strong at a shade to 2o net higher,
with May, $1.2701-27 and July, $1.45

visions finished unchanged to 45o lower.
It became apparent almost from the out
set that th corn market was In an over
sold condition. Evidence that big commis
sion houses were buying made shorts cover
freely, and brought about a decided up
turn In quotations soon after the opening.
Some of the buying was based on reports
that poor seed had rendered crop prospects
uncertain and that planted acreage would
show a reduction. Besides, field work was
said to be hampering the crop movement
Demand due to such causes, however, failed
to last, and the market had undergone a
material setback when toward the end of
the session a falling off In the visible sup
ply figures attracted notice. Fresh ad
vances then followed and the close was at
virtually the top figures of the day.
Oats were bulllshly affected by abnor
mally cold weather northwest and by ex
cessive rains elsewhere.
Weakness of the hog market carried
down provisions and so, too, did disappoint
ing exports. Grain strength, though, led
afterward to rallies.

The rise encompassed practically all th
popular war Issues, shippings, motors and
their accessories, and fully two-scor active
and Inactive Industrials more or less directly
affiliated with the war group.
Ralls were slow to com forward, but mad
gross gains of 1 to 2H points during the
Intermediate period. These wer materially
reduced In the extensive selling for profits
that marked the final hour.
United States Steel's leadership wal again
undisputed, It rising 2 to 1H, but closing
W under Its maximum, a net gain of 1.
Steel contributed no less than 276,000 to th
day's total turnover of 1,236,000 shares.
