Ballet that new style contracts, which the
proposed changes In rulea would permit,
might open the way for a decided advance
of prices, gave the corn 'market strength
almost from the outset. Much of the buying
was An the theory that the present form
of contracts would . rise promptly to the
maximum limit, fl.28 a bushel, as soon as
new style bargains were authorised. Besides
any liberal movement of oorn soon from
rural sources did not fppsar likely. Toward
the end ot the session, though, a little notice
taken of gossip about peaoe negotiations
oounted as something of an offset.
Oats were subjected to persistent com
mission house selling after an advance due
to continuance of seaboard demand. Favor
able weather and reports of an Increased car
supply In some section war bearish factors
In addition to peace talk.

NEW YORK STOCKS
Exchange Winds Up Week of
Extreme Depression; Total
Sales Amount to Only
New Tork, April 5 The stock market Was
at virtually a standstill during the greater
part of today's session, exceeding all
previous days of an abnormally dull week
In Ita nnparalled apathy. Total sales
amounted to 146.000 shares, the low record
since August 1914. Resumption of the
German drive In France accounted for the
further cessation of operations, even th
trading element taking no Interest In tho
courses of prices.
Decline of a point among Investments
shares and as much as two points In a few
specialties resulted from sheer indifference ,
or Inertia. The market seemed so thoro- '
ughly liquidated that no pretext for pres
sure existed.
The decision of the Intestate commerce
commission tn inquire Into petroleum freight
rates and scarcely a ripple among the
shares of the properties most concerned,
sueh action having evidently been dis
counted. Other domestic; developments were along
more constructive tines, general trade
advices offering further encouragement and
bank stearlngs holding well up to recent
high levels.
Mora time funds were available at the
long prevailing six per cent rate but thr
Immediate future of the money maket
hlngea largely upon requirements Incidents!
to the third Liberty loan.
Liberty Issues again furnished an over- -whelming
quota to the day's dealings in
bonds at slight fractional recessions. Inter,
national Issues were variable, French
municipals hardening. Total aalea (pel
value) aggregated $$.260,000.
ITalted States bonds (old Issues) wen
unchanged on call.
