THE BEE: OMAHA, TUESDAY, JANUARY 1. 1918. OMAN EXCEEDS QUOTA IN BOTH U. S. BOND DRIVES Takes More Than $20,000,000 When Called Upon to Help Out the War With Its Cash. 1 Omaha Manufacturing for 1917 Makes Total of $325,721 ,546 People of Omaha subscribed more than $20,000,000 to Liberty bonds on the hst and second issue during the year in the two big campaigns made throughout the country for the sale of the government bonds. As the time for offering these gov ernment war bonds drsw near Oma ha business men formed strong com mittees to work on the taking of sub scriptions. R. C. Peters was the ac tive chairman of the Omaha cam paign in the first issue in the sum mer and O. T. Eastman was the of fice manager and treasurer. Headquarters were established in the lobby of the Commercial club, and reports from the many teams working in various sections of the city were made there. Every available or ganization in the city was asked to furnish committees and teams to hustle for the subscriptions. Even the Boy Scouts did valiant work in taking subscriptions, and many of the boys won war service medals from the government for the volume of subscriptions taken. A vast corps of speakers from all parts of the state was organized and the men comprising it were known as the four minute men, who were available in all parts of the state to make four-minute talks in the theaters and other public places urging the sale of the bonds. The campaign resulted in the sale of nearly $10,000,000 of the bonds in Omaha. Second Drive. The second drive was orjjinized in much the same manner, with T. C. ' Byrne as state chairman, and W. E. Rhoades chairman for Douglas coun ty. E. F. Eolda was state secretary ami O. 'J'. Eastman again acted as treasurer for Omaha. At a mass meet ing held at the Commercial club at the opening of the campaign a total of nearly $8,000,000 was subscribed in a single hour. In this campaign Omaha and Doug las county subscribed a total of 10, 351,500, though the quota or Omaha and Douglas county was only $4,986, 000. Thus Omaha and the county sub scribed 207 per cent of the quota set for the county. Only one county in the state ex ceeded Douglas in the percentage of oversubscription. This was Hayes county where the quota was $11,400 and where the people subscribed 29, 550, or 260 per cent of the quota. Thirty counties in the stace met . exceeded their quota. Twenty-two counties reached more than 7o per cent of their quota. Twenty-one counties reached between 50 and 75 per cent of their quato 19 coun ties ran under 50 per cent.
