The United States army recruiting
offices still continue to do business at
the old stand in the Army building.
Notwithstanding the fact men of
draft age cannot enlist after today,
provisions have been made to accept
all qualified applicants under or over
the draft age, including married men.
As usual, the hallways and corri
ders were packed again Friday and
.recruiting went on unabated. Ap
parently there is no end to the long
list of available possible recruits who
arrived on every train from upstate
towns.
About 50 students were on hand in
a body and each one was anxious to
sign that little piece of paper that
would make him a soldier, while a
number of the more apprehensive
ones were unduly worked up for fear
they would be unable to pass the ex
amination. Joy Becomes Contagious.
Fully a score of recruits who had
successfully run the gauntlet were so
filled ith joy that they could hardly
contain themselves and in order to
Tiork off a little surplus energy they
gathered into a crowd all to them
selves and gave vent to their joy in
song.
Mid the stains of "Down in
Dixie." "We're Going Over," and "A
Hot Time in the Old Town Tonight,"
other less fortunate ones, or those on
the waiting list smiled at first, then
they laughed and in a few moments
the happiness had become contagious.
In he meantim the recruiting of
ficers were busy, as was evidenced by
the number bf 'the "finished product"
that was puslied out of the medical
officer's room.

Many Xmas Packages
Sent to Local Forts
"Yesterday we shipped six large
boxes containing 800 Christmas pack
ages for the soldiers at Fort Crook
and today we are sending out 12 more
boxes with 2,000 gift packages for the
soldier boys at Fort Omaha," said
Chairman Gould Dietz of the local
Red Cross chapter. "Each package
contains somethin - every soldier cher
ishes and we know the boys will ap
preciate the gifts."
Sheriff Clark presented the Com
mercial High school cadet battalion
with a large regulation silk flag at an
assembly called for the purpose Fri
day morning at the Gayety theater.
Judge W. A. Foster, ex-member of
the school board, delivered the ad
dress and Sheriff Clark made the pre
sentation speech.
The presentation was preceded by
exercises by students ot the school
and the awarding of "letters" to the
school foot ball team by Fnncipal
Dwight Porter.
Sheriff Clarks son, Uarold, is
member of the cadet company of the
Commercial High battalion which
won the competitive drill this year
The battalion had no trophy to award
the winner of competitive drill and
Sheriff Clark has presented the nan
some flag for that purpose. Tl
cadets will have four competitive
drills during the year hereafter, the
winning company to have the honor
of being designated the "Hag com
pany.
"Porkless Day" is Latest
Suggestion of Food Men
"We eat and waste 80 per cent
more protein than we can make use
of, is a statement ot the food ad
ministration.
"We eat and waste 240 per cent
more fats than necessary to the wel
fare of the human body.
"And we can get our carbohydrates
just as well from oats and corn as
from wheat."
The food administration has figured
up the quantity of necessary foods
contained in the average daily rations
of the American people, and has con
cluded that the people could easily do
with less meat and still less wheat
than they are now using. So they
have suggested a porkless day in ad
dition to the present meatless day.
Porkless day is to be on Saturday.
They then suggest in addition to the
present wheatless and meatless days,
one wheatless and one meatless meal
each day.
Marine Corps Will Enlist
Men Up Till Saturday Noon
The marine corps will continue to
enlist men of draft age up till 12
o'clock Saturday noon. Sergeant Car
penter, in charge of the recruiting
office at 210 South Fourteenth street,
looks for a record-breaking rish of
enlistments Saturday morning.
