Cattle As usual on Friday, the run of
cattle was comparatively light, and the
supply so fsr this week has been fully
s.uuu snort or last. Demand from both
shippers and packers was very keen today
and prices all ot 100150 higher than yes
terday, right good cornfed beeves selling
up to $13.75, and very good grasaers bring
ing $10.76. General market le anywhere
from 50c to 7oo higher than It was a week
or ten days ago, and there le a very strong
and healthy undertone to the trade.
v nat few cows and belters were here
found a ready sale at unevenly higher
prices and bulk of the she stock is selling
anywhere from 60c to $1.00 higher than the
low time ten days ago. Veal calves, bulls,
stags, etc., are going freely at fully steady
and nl eome cases strong prices.
There was not much activity In the
ttocker and feeder trade, as offerings were
very limited, but demand was keen from
the country and anything at all useful In
this line found a ready sale at prices 50c 9
$1.26 higher than the early part ot last
week.

Flattening of Dlatlllery tlemand Sends Cora
Uownwsrd.
Chicago, Aug. 10 Flattening out of dis
tillery demand for corn accompanied the
xlBiilng of the food control bill today by
President Wilson, and gave a decided down
ward awing to tho corn market. The pro
hibition clause In the hill was allowed to
have Immediate full effect and prices closed
nervous, cash quotations demoralised and
futures 1 to lHc net lower, with le
cemher 31.16. to 11.15 and May $1.12
to $1.13. Wheat finished 4o down at
$2.18, September and oats off 0o to
0c. Provisions scored an advance of
3 to 30.
Greatly unsettled conditions regarding the
purchase ot corn for Immediate delivery
became apparent when the fact developed,
that the withdrawal of distillers aa buyers
was of a general and datermlned character
that did not seem likely to be reversed aa
a whole. Breska of 8 to He a bushel
took place In spot tranasctlons as com
pared with yesterday and there was free
sailing of future deliveries by leading houses
At the same time that tho call for cash
com was fading away tho offerings from
rural sources appeared to he on tho Increase.
Under sueh clrcumstaneesi weakness Inten
sified during the late, dealings, and there
was no return of an early transient dis
play of moderate flrmnepa based chiefly
on forecasts of cool weather and on reports
of a light froat last nlcht In North Da
kota. A declining tendency In the wheat mar
ket was noticeable from tho outset, eape
daily after attention had been generally
directed to the fact that the minimum
prlco of $2 In the food control bill would
not go Into effect until July 1, 1918. There
had been a somewhat general mistaken
Impreaalon that theD minimum would ap
ply on this year's crop. Gossip was cur
rent that farmers at present were carrylnr
more wheat than was ever before the case
St this part of the season.
Oats went heavily down grade In sym
pathy with corn. Domestic threshing re
turns continued very favorable and On
tario waa reported to have a record crop.
Peaplte the drop in corn values, provis
ions' showed much strength. The main rea
son was n advance of S6o In the hog mar
ket, lifting choice hogs to $17 a hundred
weight, the highest price ever known hew.
