CHICAGO CHAIN M ARK FT.
Prospect of Heavy Corn Imports From Yen
suela Force Trices Down in Chicago Pit.
Chicago, July 25. rrospects of liberal
Imports of corn to the United State from
Venezuela gave considerable Impetus today
to the downward swing of the corn market
Despite something of a reaction, prices
closed '4n net lower, with September a
$1.63 and December at $1.1 4 0
Wheat finished six to 13c down and oat
le to Vie advance. Provision gained
25 32c.
It was the first time In history that corn
prices here bad even been affected by con
dltlonse in Venezuela. Bearish sentiment
was alsa Increased by favorable weather
today in Illinois and most of the other bl
producing state, and by an attendant gen
oral Improvement of crop reports except
from western Kansas, where drouth still
persisted. Enlarged rural offerings counted
s an additional factor in casing down
prices.
Rain, where needed on notn siaes or tne
Canadian border, gave an advantage to the
bear in wheat. Besides, rutting of spring
wheat was said to have begun already in
South Dakota. Threshing of winter wheat
waa reported to be making rapid progress
and there were sign of an increased move
ment to terminal markets.
Oats sympathized with the weakness o
corn. Buying on tne part oi inausiries
however, checked declines.
Provisions advanced sharply on account
of reauests from the Belgian relief commit
te for offers of lard and meat. There was
active buying on the part of packers and
shorts covered freely.

Corn and Wheat Region Bulletin.
Washington, July 25. Temperature was
generally below normal In the central Mis
sissippi and Ohio valleys and southward,
and above normal in the north and west
Well distributed rain 4n the south were
sufficient for growing crop in the central
Mississippi valley and eastward. Rain is
badly needed In the central Missouri val
ley and westward. Corn Improved In the
central and eastern districts, but needs
more rain badly In Kansas. Rain was too
late for most corn In Oklahoma and Texas.
Corn is tassellng north to the upper Ohio
and central Missouri valleys. Frequent rains
caused some delay in haying, harvesting,
and threshing In the eastern districts, but
work progressed satisfactorily in the central
and western. 8pring wheat Improved in
Minnesota, South Dakota and eastern North
Dakota, but deteriorated greatly In Mon
tana and westward.

Cattle Receipts of cattle were very fair
today, about 3,600 head, and the three days'
supply has been fully 3,000 larger than for
the first half of last week. Not a great
many desirable cornfed beeves wore in
cluded In the arrivals today and the pro
portion of western grass stock is on the
increase. AVell finished beeves of all welgh's
were quotably about steady, both heavy 1
tie and yearlings selling up to $13.75. (.111
the half fat and grassy cattle the market
was In bad shape, slow and unevenly lower.
Local packers are getting so many grass
cattle from the south that tho demand for
the half fat and more or loss grassy cattle
here has been seriously cut down and prices
are from 25O50O lower than they were a
week ago.
Cows and heifer were also rather Blow
sal at unevenly lower prices. Western and
(outhern granaers are taking the place of
native she stock at this time and values
are right around 6Uc lower than thoy were
at this time last week. Veal calves are
quotably steady, but bulls, stags, etc., are
low sale at lower figures. '
Husiness )n stockers and feeders was
rather quiet, as there is no sustained de
mand from the country at present for this
class of stock. A few of the more desirable
offerings find an outlet at about steady
prices, but the trend of values on tho gen
eral run of stockers is docldedly lower.

Hogs Chicago had only a decent run, and
was reported opening slow at somewhat
stronger prices, but under tho Influence of
heavy supplies at this and one or two other
river markets, local values were lower on
the bulk of the offerings. On the strength
of the bullish advices from the Windy City
a few good shipping hogs were bought right
at the start that were fully steady to In
soma cases a little higher, but later ship
ping purchase were easier, though they did
not show as much decline as killers.
Packer bid a dime or more lower right
from the outset, and while sellers fought
the decline for a while, the' size of the of
ferings (eve buyers control of the market,
and In the end most of the packing hogs
old 10c lower or close to It. After a trad
ing basis had been established movement
became fairly active and toward the clnsn
values strengthened up a little, some of the
later sales not being over 610c lower.
The extreme close was the best time In
the killer market, the last hog to sell going
at price that were mainly steady with yes
terday. A good clearance was made before
11 o'clock, Paekers made most of their
purchases at $14.40 and upward, long
strings selling around $14.50014.60. There
waa a good sprinkling of the better mixed
and butcher kinds and light grades at $14.76
and better, while the best butcher weights
sold as high as $15.56, the price being as
high as has been paid this month.

Sheep Buyers had their lines laid for s
26c reduction In prices this morning, and
while a good many sellers were still hang
ing on at noon, it looked as though the
packer would carry their point. What
sales had been made up to midday showed
the quarter slump. Two or three decks of
natives Bold around $15.16, a few head
reached $15.15 and a string of rangers,
mate of lambs that brought $15.50 yester
day, sold just before the noon whistles blew
at $15.25, Upward of ten loads were still In
the penB, most of them under $16.00 bids.
The offerings of old sheep were not broad
enough to make a market, though the tone
was steady. No ewes of any consequence
were here, and about the only fat sheep
that amounted to anything were two cars
of real good yearlings and wethers, which
sold at $10.60.
The demand for feeders was fairly broad
and ome trading was done fairly early,
while by noon a good share of the feeding
lamb supply had been cleaned up. Prices
wero Just about steady, sales Including a
somewhat fleshy sort at $16.00, and lighter
kinds on up to $16.25, the latter price equal-
ng the day top on fat stuff. Three cars
of feeding wethers were Included In tho
stuff that was still In sellers' hands at lunch
time.
