EDWARDS BROTHERS
ENTER SEMI-FINALS
j
Medalist WiU Meet Ouimet
and Other to Play Anderson
in Western' Golf Cham
pionship Match.
(fly Aaaoclated Prexa.)
Chicu, July 12. Donald Edwards,
medalist, will p'.ay Francis Ouiiiict,
forr... tiational champion, and Ken
neth Edwards will play John G.; An
derson of New Yck in the thirty-six
hole semi-finals of the Western Ama
teur Golf championship tomorrow, as
a result of today s matches at the
Midlothian Country club, the home of
the Edwards brothers.
Ouimet today had a runaway match
with Tetcr Bamett, a youthful Chi-;
casroan. winning 14 up aiAl 13 to play,
one of the easiest matches on record.
Donald Inwards eliminated Jack May,
Argentine champion, 3 and 1. Kenneth
Edwards ousted Jesse Guilford, Mas
sachusetts champion, one up after a
gruelling contest, in which Guilford
set a c urse record of 71 in the fore
noon and gained a lead of four holes;
Anderson coming from behind when
Ned Sawyer fell off of the last nine,
probably as a result of his twelve-hole
match on Wednesday, defeated the
former western champion one" up.
Most of the large gallery followed
the Sawyer and Anderson match and
saw good golf, most of the thirty-six
holes. ,;
The long driving Guilford and Ken
neth Edwards did drew a large gal
lery also, "oth played exceltent golf,
Guilford scoring 71. 79, ISO, while Ed
wards made 75, 73, 148, two better
than Donald Edwards' medal score in
the qualifying rounds. Guilford did not
outdrive Edwards much of the war.
but his approaches were of the Chick
Evans type a .d his putts sought the
hole like steel seeks a magnet.

BEN EARL LOSES TO
PACERjlNGLE G
Famous Omaha Stepper Hum
bled by Eastern Horse in
Thrilling Match Race at
Youngstown, Ohio.
Youngstown, O., July 12. (Special
Telegram.) Witht wo events com
pleted, including the special match
race between Single G. and Ben Earl,
owned by Edward Peterson of Oma
ha, today's program was held over
aftej a young cloudburst made its ap- '
pearance at Southern park, although
down town, less than four miles away,
the sun shone brightly and not a drop
of rain fell.
Single-G, won from Ben Earl in
straight heats, the best time being
2:064, equaling the track record made
by Roan Hal two years ago.
Braving threatening weather, more
than 10,000 persons crowded into the
park, attracted largely by the match
between the champion pacers. Hun
dreds of visitors came here especially
for this attraction So large was the
crowd that hundreds of fans could not
get near the park, the roads leading
to the entrances being blocked solid
for a mile with automobiles.
Single G. sold 100 to 5 in the auc
tion, and after the first heat you could
narhe your price. Jamison drew the
pole and ChiWs got away with him in
a grand start. Childs went right after
the barefoot horse, but 'Jamison kept
the lead until reaching the draw gate
on the first lap, when a momentary
jump threw Single G. off his stride.
Ben Earl was under the wire at the
half by a head, but Jamison recovered
quickly and held his position, Childs
easing up at the finish when he fig
ured he could not catch him. Single
G. won the heat in 2:06.
Loses by a Nose. '
Childs tried a different system in
the second heat, laying behind Single
G. until the home stretch was reached,
when heendeavored to brush past.
However, Single G. had the reserve,
too. The finish was a thriller, Ben
Earl coming within a nose of winning.
The last quarter was made in 0:30J4.
With a storm brewing and every
body running to shelter, the third
heat. began with rain falling. Ben
Earl had a slight advantage in the
start and shot ahead of Jamison at
the first turn, traveling for all he waa
worth. Jamison pulled up alongside
and raced neck and neck with him all
the way until the back stretch, when
he forged ahead and cantered home a
winner.
Then the young deluge arrived,
causing a postponement until Friday.
The meet will close Saturday. The
crowd was the largest that ever at
tended any event at Southern park.
The purse was $1,500, winner take all.
