Police Notify Ulmer
That His Auto is Stolen

"Of course, I got it; didn't I lock it
up last night?" Ulmer answered in a
much peeved ana sleepy voice.
It was with an apologetic air that lie
reported to central station a tew mo
ments later that someone had broken
into his garage and stolen his ma
chine.
Early Sunday morning Richard

ported to police that two men were
stripping a car by his house of ac
cessories. When Detective Rooney
and Officer Francl arrived they found
an abandoned machine with a broken
riitlit wheel md lettered H. C. U. Col
lins told the officers that the men
fled soon after he called the station.
He said they were trying to take otf
one of his wheels to tit tne aban
doned car.
The onlv H. C. U. which could be
found in the directory was that of
H. C. Ulmer. He identified the car
as belonging to him.
"I certainlv owe the police an apol
ogy," Ulmer said. "They told rue
my car was stolen betore i Knew it.
Two Big Passenger Ships
Are Sunk Off Plymouth
New York, May 14. The British
passenger steamship Medina, a 12,-350-ton
vessel, owned by the Penin
sular & Oriental Steam Navigation
company, was torpedoed and sunk
by a German submarine April 28 off
the coast of Plymouth, according to
American passengers arriving here to
day from England.
On the same day in almost the
same locality the Omrah, a vessel of
8,130 tons, owned by the Orient
Steam Navigation company was also
torpedoed and sunk, the passengers
said.
No lives were lost on either ship,
but valuable cargoes went down. On
the Medina were more than 300 per
sons, passengers and crew.

A neighborhood from Vinton to
Hickorv streets, between Sixteenth
and Twentieth streets, holds premier
place for thrifty gardening.
A census ot the city by man car

partment shows that this neighbor
hood has 275 gardens and that not
one famify having ground space failed
to plant something, home ot tne
gardens are small. The largest has
four lots.
"This surely is a wonderful showing
and special mention should be made
of their neighborhood," said Director
Fleharty of the city s garden bureau.
More Recruits Arrive
To Train at Fort Omaha
Three non-commissioned officers
and 160 recruits for the signal corps
arrived Sunday at Fort Omaha, com
ing on a special tram over the Mis
souri Pacific. The party came from
Old Point Comfort, Va and will go
into training here, being attached to
the air corp.
I he arrival ot the recruits increases
the strength of the post to 400 men.
More are expected within a few days
It is expected that by July 1 there
will be 5.000 men stationed at Fort
Omaha. At this time Captain Mc-
tlgin is m command.
Convalescent Aid Society

The convalescent workers are a group
of representatives of churches, re
ligious and charitable organizations.

Burlington Road's Crop Report
Shows that Majority of
Plowing for Corn Has
Been Finished.
The Burlington'!) crop report for
the week ending last Saturday night
and having to do with conditions in
Nebraska indicates that while wheat
was badly damaged by the cold of last
winter there will be nothing like a
total failure.
On the McCook division, covering
the southwestern portion of the state,
the condition of winter wheat at this
time is estimated at 50 to 75 per cent
of the normal for this season of the
year.
On the Lincoln division, around
Grand Island. Seward, Hastings,
York, Columbus, Sutton, Crete and
Aurora, winter wheat is a total loss.
On other portions of the division
the condition is reported at 40 to 90
per cent of the normal.
On the Wymore division, around
Strang and Superior, the crop is a
total loss, with a 5 to 40 per cent
prospect elsewhere.
Spring wheat is in good condition
and making rapid growth. The same
is true with reference to oats, the
cold and wet weather having been
favorable to tile growth.
It is estimated that three-fourths
of the plowing for corn has been
finished. Planting is going on rap
idly and will be about finished by the
end of this week.
Everywhere in the state alfalfa
and red clover was badly winter
killed.

Pacific headquarters men or women
in bed. The carly-to-work order has
now become operative. Under the
old schedule the work day started at
8:15 in the morning and ended at 5:30
in the afternoon. Under the present
schedule that will continue in force
until September 1, the work day will
start at 7 -30 and end at 4:30.
During the long afternoons off
Union Pacific oOicials and employes,
instead of going to the golf links and
pleasure resorts, are expected to spend
their time in the gardens, helping to
increase the quantity of foodstuffs.

Practically all the wheat and corn
in storage, it is said, has been sold
and is being held for millers of Oma
ha trade territory. From now on it
is expected that receipts will be light
until the next crop is available, as it is
understood that the farmers have sold
about all of their wheat and a goodly
partion of their corn.
