Omaha Future. Th government crop report shows s big decrease tn the supply of wheat and corn nu under ordinary conditions this would e' a bullish factor in the market, bat the peace rumors and th lack of shipping facili ties, have placed the bears In control, and the close on May wheat was tl.tl, a drop of It from the close Thursday. The market opened from SltjO. to 4c lower and the decline started heavy selling by shorts and covering by longs. The corn market was snectea tn seme degree by the loss In wheat, but th strong cash situation and the decrease In elevator stocks served to keep up corn values. Considering the decline in wneat, oats also held up well, but the trade In this market was very light, and closing prloea were un hanged on December ana io lower on May. Local rang or options: "Art. Get-any' Latest Peaee Propeeala Demor alise Wheat Market. Chicago. Dec. It. Report regarding die- armament and peace threw wheat values to the winds today. Kxctted selling re sulted In losses that Jual before the end of the day amounted to 13 a bushel. The close was wild at 11.64 to 31.66 for May and 91.31 to 11.83 for July, with the market as a whole 10c to 13o under yesterday's finish. Corn showed a setback of lo to 3o and oats 2o to 3c. Pro vision wound up with gains of 16c to 42c. Such furious selling as came when the wheat market opened rarely has been seen Id Cbjcasfo. Th trade was confronting an authorised statement from the oerman em bassy at Washington that the proposed peace parley ahould discuss universal limi ted disarmament. From the Instantaneous wholesale overturning of prices, and the deafening uproar of offerings to unload holding, the fact seemed plain that at least In the wneat pit opinion was very unanimous that a long step had been taken toward peace, urgency to sell was so in tense that inlttal quotations varied aa much as nearly 9 cents a bushel among broker not thirty feet apart. The nrat break. which carried the market down 3c to 9c, widened within an hour to 10c, and despite Intermittent rallies, due largely to Droftt-taking by daring snorts, tne weak neas grew more and more acute especially in the last fifteen minutes oi tne session. In addition to the Oerman embassy state' ment, referring to a limitation of arma ment, the wheat trade waa taking Into ac count reports that Groat llriteln and Its allies would directly or indirectly call for Oermsny'a other terms and that neutrals, Including the United States, were consider ing Independent measures to help bring about an understanding netween tne Bellig erents. Yesterday's big setback In stocks formed a further derided bearish Influence. Misleading forecasts of the Washington eroD reports gave tne bulls a brief respite. rallying the market about 8 cents, but, the report Itself sent prices down again as the yield of wheat In the United States for 1918 waa estimated to have increased over pre vt mis returns about 81.000,000 bushels. Falling off In the government estimate of the corn crop wss a factor In giving relative steadlneea to corn. Nevertheless. owing to sympathy with wheat the market ahowed a decided sag. Oats -were de pressed by heavy sales on the part of a leadtna? export concern. ine amount aia posed of from this source alone was said to anregate a.eoo.ooo bus nets. Provision responded only to a moderate extent to peace developments. It was said substantial purchases of lard were made for Belslum. Increasing t'antton the Outstanding feature. New York, Dec. 16, Dun' Review to morrow will say: The outstanding and most reassuring fea ture of the business situation as It has been for some time, Is the increased caution manifested In banking, producing, and dis tributing channels. Foreign developments have accentuated the tendency toward wholesome conservatism without affecting the progress of finance, or lessening the volume of transactions In trade and In dustry, and recent speculative ' readjust ments have made the general outlook dis tinctly clearer. Strength continues pro nounced In many quarters and buyers, while operating with sustained confidence, give mora consideration to tne element of cost In making commitments for the future. Activity In some branches has subsided as It Invariably does at this season, with sales men coming In from the road for the holi days and annual inventories under way, or In course of preparation. Peace probabilities were agsln reflected by a comparatively active demand in the market for coffee fu tures here today, and t&ere were further advance. The opening was somewhat Ir-1 regular, with first prices 1 point lower to 1 point higher, and reports that Braxlllan shipper showed a willingness to sell, at yesterday s quotations, probably prompted realising. Offerings were readily absorbed by a broadening outside demand, however, and active months sold 11 to 18 points net higher during the afternoon, with March touching 8.76 and July t.00, or about 66 to 83 points above the low level ot Monday. The close was slightly off from the beat under realising, but steady at a net ad vance of 7 to 11 point. The toek market underwent its third and moat severe test of the week today, further eerlous inroads being made upon prices curing the first half of the senslon of another enormous sell ing wave. Thla condition was materially remedied In the later dealings, particularly in the final hour a brisk rally, occasioned in part by hurried short ceverlns, wiping out many losses and substituting' notable gains.
