STILL STICKING TO ASQJlTH AT THE . . the high cpst ol living virtually have rntnnlrterf a rime-ram to nlace before President Wilson and Attorney Gen eral Gregory tomorrow, providing for simultaneous grand jury investiga tions throughout the country. It is understood that in addition to the officials now directly engaged in . collecting information others may be named. It was said that doubt no longer existed whether there had been com binations of men to boost coal prices and that effective means to punish . those who have violated the law in contributing to the rings were being studied. President Wilson and the cabinet discussed the situation today and, it is understood, decided to await further disclosures before reaching a conclusion as to recommendations to congress. The house commerce com mittee decided to defer action on bills and resolutions bearing upon the subject until after the holidays. United States Attorney Anderson of Boston, conducting (he investiga tion, called at the White House, con ferred (or several hours with the In terstate Commerce commission of ficials concerning the activities' of coal dealers, spent some time with Oliver E. Page, the department's ex pert on drawing indictments, and dis patched fresh instructions to the field ' force of investigators throughout the country. . , 1 ' Two Situations Related. , The Interstate Commerce commis sion began work on a mass of in formation relating to car shortage and coat shipments, for use in contem plated prosecutions. The two situa tions, it was said, were closely re lated. Indications are that the Department of Jus'tice will concentrate its imme diate activities on inquiring into oper ations of oal dealers and minor rail road . employes in the middle west, -'with a riek of determining whether cars were deliberately withdrawn from their normal channels to aid in creating an artificially high level in prices. , ' Interstate Commerce commission statistics are understood to show that at the height of the rise in coal prices, at a time when there was an apparent shortage in the supply, hundreds of loaded cars stood in railroad yards in the middle west. ; ' , Packers Hold,Eggs ' For Their Own Use And Not for 'Corner' Chicago Dec 9, Investigation 'of fedeial officials in the grand jury in quiry into the high cpst of living cen tered today on the alleged operations "of four speculators, said to be known in produce circles as the "big four." It has been asserted that these four men are the largest individual owners of cold storage eggs in Chicago and that they' command, with the excep tion of the eggs owned by the packers, ill the visible sunolv of 500.000 cases. 1 , .Intimations also. were made by gov- ernment officials that it practically has 1 i been determined that all the eggs be ' ing held by the packers are tor use ' I in their own business and are not be ing held for the purpose of controlling ! the market , Firemen to Retire : . COMPLAIN TO WHITLOOK Havre, France, Dec. 9. Five hun dred judges and members of the Bel gian bar, notable among whom, are the judges of the Court of Cassation of Brussels, the court of appeals and the courts of commerce, 'have signed a protest to General von Bissing, the military governor of Belgium against the deportations of Belgians as in contempt, of natural rights, of the statute law and of the law of nations." Twenty Belgian senators and twen ty-three Belgian deputies now Irving in Urussels have taken tne personal risk of sending a signed protest to General von Biasing against the de portations. They also sent copies of their protest to Brand w hillock,' the American minister to Belgium and to the diplomatic representatives of other .countries. ., un many occasions, says tne let ter to the diplomats in part, "civilized powers have intervened in favor -of oppressed peoples. Many times they have given protection to populations driven, from their firesides and yet these peoples were not carried off into slavery.-, It remained for the fright ful war of which we were the first vic tims to offer such a spectacle to the world. We are persuaded that Bel- ?ium will not have appealed in vain or the aid of your government to pro tect it from the pitiless edicts that vio lates at the same time the rights of man and the fourth contention of The Hague with all the laws at humanity. The letter to General von ttissmg begins as. follows: , , Excellency, it seemed that no Dam could be added to those with which we have been weighed down since the occupation of our country. Our liber ties have been ' abolished our, in dustry and commerce annihilated, our moral and instruemnts of labor ex ported, our public fortunes ruined, destitution succeeding easy circum stances. New Violence Falls On Us. "Privations, anguish and bereave ment, all that has been endured, with out other revolt than the mute pro testations of our souls. We suffered in common and our common pains light ened, the burden of individual misery, but now a new violence falls upon us and tears apart our families. Hun dreds, thousands ot peaceable citi zens of all ages and conditions a civil population have been abruptly and brutally snatched from their firesides and deported into Germany. Hundreds, thousands of women. children and aged have been ahand-j orted, deprived of support and given over to the anguish of a separation tne duration ot which no one can foresee. BARNES Suite 513 to 520 Rose Bldf. . , Phone London, Dec. 9 Events today em phasized the fact that David Lloyd George, the new premier, has split the liberal party into two fatcions. The new cabinet will command more support from the conservatives in Parliament than from the liberals. The liberal inference pledged it self to support the new goverment, but the old party leaders will occupy in the House, of Commons a place of friendly -opposition and criticism. Nearly all the antagonism the new administration is meeting comes from members of the liberal party And : from liberal Nnewspapers. although j Lord N'orthcliffe. who Jias been one j of Premier Lloyd George's strongest advocates, made a strong protest to day in th Evening News, wmcn the appointment of, A. J. Halfour and Lord Robfrl,C'ccil to the foreign of fice was reported. Balfour Not a Favorite. His newsppers have been listing Balfour as one of the "senile states men," and aAatks Lord Robert on the- ground that his management of the blockade has shown more, considera tion for the interests of neutral na tions than for British intrests. A large section of the liberal, party remains faithful to Premier Asquith and looks upon Lloyd George' as a party wrecker and denounces the methods by which he achieved power, i Criticism is treely made ot the old cabineters that they were too import ant to listen to their followers. The chief comment on today's lib eral conference is that Mr. Asquith consented to meet the rank and file arid discuss party interests only when he was leaving office. The newspa pers complain that he had been deaf to former appeals to take his follow ers into his confidence. - Persistence Advertising.
